PLEASE SIGN this petition to SAVE the Government’s Central Microchip Portal to protect our microchipped pets: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/7486… Is Defra moving us into a two-tier microchip database search system, instead of their promised Central Microchip Portal—including all 25 compliant databases—available to all authorised users, 24/7, free of charge, to improve the existing fragmented search system? Since microchipping our pets is mandatory by law, should the pet microchip identification database system operate primarily as a public service rather than a commercial market? The UK is moving from a government-controlled public portal ➡️ to an industry-controlled, commercially mediated search network. And yes—that can naturally evolve into a two-tier system, even if no one officially calls it that. AMDO, 10 of the 25 microchip databases are controlling the next steps. Unanswered questions: Only 10 microchip databases will be included in the SPoS—what happens to pet registrations on the remaining 15? AMDO will choose what authorised users have access to the SPoS—animal wardens are said to be excluded? The new annual subscription charges with some databases—will this be used against pet owners who don’t join the new pricing, so their pets will not be on the SPoS? The commercial angle (this is the big shift) Defra explicitly says: “commercial solutions” And Parliament confirms: • Databases are commercial providers • Defra does not regulate what they charge What that means in practice AMDO’s Single Point of Search (SPoS) system could involve: • Paid access (for some users or features) • Subscription models via solution providers • Competition between gateway platforms Combined with: “users sign up to ONE solution” That creates a structure where: • Access is controlled by commercial intermediaries • Not a neutral public infrastructure Pet owners need an opportunity to have this issue debated in Parliament!
