Good News Saturday. 😊 So an undocumented Nigerian illegal immigrant has won the jackpot on the lottery. But can't have it because he's an undocumented illegal immigrant. There is some justice in the world. How delicious. Karma at its best. 🤣

My husband recently converted part of our shed into a small chicken area, and he's been looking for inexpensive ways to improve it without spending a fortune. A few weeks ago, he built these nesting boxes using old buckets that someone was throwing away. His reasoning was simple: the chickens don't care what the nesting boxes look like as long as they're comfortable and safe. The surprising part is that the hens immediately started using them. From a practical standpoint, it's hard to argue with the results. They're easy to clean, inexpensive to replace, and seem to be working exactly as intended. The problem is that every time someone sees them, the opinions are completely divided. Some people think it's a smart use of materials and a great example of not wasting money. Others think it makes the coop look temporary and unprofessional. My husband believes too many people focus on appearances instead of whether something actually works. I understand his point, but I also think there is value in building something that looks as good as it functions. Now I'm wondering where that balance should be. If a solution is effective, affordable, and the animals seem happy with it, does it really matter what other people think about how it looks? I'd genuinely like to hear some honest opinions because this debate has been going on in our house for weeks.

#OTD in 1984, the Leander-class frigate HMS Jupiter became wedged under London Bridge after the captain had declined to use available tugs to help navigate the currents of the Thames. The accident resulted in significant damage to both the ship and the landmark. The captain was court-martialed and severely reprimanded.

@AnoopKaippalli India has shown the world what can be done with railways. Both in terms of electrification and project Unigauge converting getting on for half the route mileage from meter to Broad Gauge - the Indian standard

🇺🇸 US: Diesel 🇨🇦 Canada: Diesel 🇦🇺 Australia: Diesel Major economies run double-stack freight trains, but they still rely on diesel because standard electric lines can't clear two-story trains. But instead of settling, India custom-built a 7.5-meter high-rise grid. Today, India is the FIRST and ONLY country on Earth running double-stack containers on pure electric power. This is the scale of transformation happening under the Modi govt.

@ChimeWhistle @ClarkeMicah Stand on Dunster Station which had a goods shed and yard, and you can just see Minehead station which was similarly equipped. Even pre WW1 I cant see that traffic ever justified this level of provision

@ClarkeMicah When one considers that many of those stations had their own yard or sidings, it's also amazing just how many freight facilities the railway lost with the closure of stations.

.@asuersonicade. It is amusing, when a claim made by my opponents is clearly refuted by undeniable fact, that they change the subject. My only point is that railway coverage was far more extensive than people now realise.
Adrian Brown@supersonicade

@MovetheWorld9 @ClarkeMicah In 1922 the railways had precious little viable competition. Things change. And it's not ownership, it's structure & control that matter - dogmatically 'private vs public' isn't helpful.

Broken Britain - Police refuse to help.... Woman in her 80s returned home to find 'Eastern Europeans' had moved into her house... and police say they can't help A gang of suspected foreign criminals seized the home of a frail pensioner while she was visiting her 'lonely' 102-year-old friend, sparking an 'absurd' two-month legal battle to try and remove them. Shameless squatters allegedly broke into the elderly woman's £590,000 terraced property in Chingford, north-east London, at the end of April and have refused to leave. The retired woman, who is believed to be in her 80s and living alone, is thought to have been 'deliberately targeted' by an organised crime group from Eastern Europe She has been left effectively homeless as a result and is understood to have suffered a serious health condition following her nightmare ordeal. However, despite her home now being in the hands of strangers, the Metropolitan Police has refused to take action to remove the group, claiming the matter is a civil offence and not a criminal one. And those now allegedly holding the pensioner's property ransom have defiantly said; 'it's all fine' and 'nothing is happening' - before refusing to say when or if they would be leaving. The fiasco has sparked outrage among neighbours, with one 63-year-old fuming: 'They're taking the p***. This elderly woman has worked so hard for this country and paid her taxes and now this has happened... It's f***ing outrageous.' Among those seen leaving the home was a woman and a number of children. It's unclear if they are among those now allegedly living in the building 'This whole thing is organised - it's an organised crime... [but] trying to get police to take action on this is completely astonishing.' When journalists visited the quiet suburban street, a number of families were seen coming in and out of the three-bed terraced house. One was driving an untaxed, grey Mercedes C class. Others appeared to be driving a luxury BMW X5. The group was also accompanied by at least three young children. It's unclear whether those spotted entering and leaving the home are among the alleged squatters. Locals claimed to have seen dozens of people visiting the property in recent weeks - while others alleged that human faeces had been smeared on neighbouring homes. The elderly homeowner, thought to be a widowed mother, is now understood to be living with family in the West Country, after having suffered a serious health condition.

@GarethDennis There are a lot of issues about Companies & Directors I wont go into here, BUT some years ago I was talking to someone who worked for BT. Quite a few construction companies have gone bankrupt because they cut through BT cables as they hadn't checked the plans.

Once again - this CANNOT be put on drivers. Firms need to be legally responsible for the FULL costs of damage AND train delays. Given this can quickly run into the millions, the threat of a bridge strike resulting in total bankruptcy might help them take it seriously.

@DanNeidle What I might suggest @DanNeidle is replacing business rates with a tax on Business Rent similar to VAT. Clearly there would have to be a tax based on likley rental value for owned and empty premises

The hospitality industry wants their VAT cut to 10%. It will cost £12bn Who benefits? ❌ The smallest most vulnerable businesses? Nope. 45% get nothing. ❌ Consumers? Nope - prices won't fall. ✅ Nearly half the cash goes straight to large chains. McDonald's gets £400m. 🧵:

I've been to Northern Ireland several times and have always felt comfortable in the Catholic, pro Ireland areas. The Protestant, unionist areas on the other hand are full of aggressive racists. Not everybody of course, but far too many of them. Pro British, pro Israeli pond life. These are the people disgracing the image of Northern Ireland in the eyes of the world right now.
