When you and your friends need to break a chunk off Antarctica and you want to feel less bad about it

@ApoStructura @BTRBT_ It's further worth noting they expanded our of Africa, across Eurasia, and evehtually to the Americas. They did not find all those resources that enabled more efficient, higher standards of living, until they filled the Earth.
I am certain then, that we do the same in space.
English

They didn’t have access to the same resources, the ressources were there, but they couldn’t exploit them.
By that logic they also had access to lunar or asteroid belt resources that were also there the whole time.
The key is that we’re building the tech to be able to start exploiting ressources that we couldn’t use before, same way we did for metal, fossil fuels, the sun and everything so far
English

I see this rebuttal a lot, but I think it's a bit misguided, and misses a more fundamental point. 🧵
Setting aside the fact that the solar system / galaxy is quite a bit larger, but still ultimately finite, the key point is that economic growth isn't always about "more stuff."
ApoStructura@ApoStructura
Who said anything about a closed finite system?

And people always say Neutron is small? It's almost as tall as Starship, guys! All jokes aside, though... what an awful graphic.

@Truthful_ast @_digital_donuts These criminal actions are in conflict with our beliefs, to uphold the law. I hope that justice will be served by this case going to court, and the local police will be held accountable.
English

@_digital_donuts The culture of a state held by a religious cult*
English

The sad reality of this video infringing basic rights to keep a cult (mormons) into power is that the attention span of people is so short that literally all of this will just be forgotten in a year and the corrupt scumbags behind it will likely get away with it just like every other time
ApoStructura@ApoStructura
The Reckless Ben Lego story is the most outrageous case of police corruption I’ve ever seen. The entire police department of American Fork (a city of 30k) is compromised and being used as a private militia for Bricks & Minifigs to harass and arrest plaintives.
English

@Truthful_ast Truthful, I'm disappointed. I know criticisms many have about our faith, but I encourage you to see us as more than just the words of our detractors.
I'm a Latter-day Saint. I love space, and want to do good in this world.
I like your YouTube and hope you'll consider what I say.
English

@Neon_Bots @ApoStructura @grok To determine if someone is in full fellowship in the church, they simply declare to their bishop if they have paid a full tithe. There is not a check of the financial records or anything.
It is a matter between them and God.
English

@Neon_Bots @ApoStructura @grok When we invite people to join our church, we make it extremely clear that tithing is a commandment God asks of church members.
Still I reiterate that it is not forced in the sense that some would claim. We do not pass a collection plate. Tithing is done confidentially. Further -
English

@ApoStructura @SammyDo32 Absolutely. I'll acknowledge I'm a bit out of my depth as I'm not very knowledgeable about criminal law, all I can say is it looks really sketchy and this definitely needs to go to court.
English

Let’s hope this whole thing finds its way through the justice system. Considering how far the local police has been willing to go it looks like drastic measures will have to be taken. I mean they tried to throw someone in jail for 30 days as a means of intimidation, and repeatedly harassed and arrested people to protect a member of their cummunity, I hope the local community steps up and calls this out
English

@Neon_Bots @grok @ApoStructura I don't know what the local church unit is doing. The local church unit can I believe grant at least a portion of that help, if the family asks for it, but I have not been in the leadership of a congregation so do not know all the particulars of how financial assistance works.
English

@Rust_ranger57 @grok @ApoStructura Why not ask the church to take care of the dying man with cancer that they are stealing from? Wouldn't that be a good use of tithes like you kept harping on about?
Instead you just want them punished and don't even mention the others over this "small $200,000" issue.
English

@Rust_ranger57 @ApoStructura @grok Is the Lego store that stole the Star Wars collection run by Mormons? Is the police force that arrested the YouTuber Mormon?
English

@ApoStructura @SammyDo32 Yes, it is, we recognize that, but we encourage it nonetheless.
I say this as a casual member, while Latter-day Saint is the best, "LDS" is much preferable to "Mormon."
Mormon we believe was a prophet who compiled the book of scripture with his name. We worship Christ, not him.
English

@Rust_ranger57 @SammyDo32 Is there any diminutive to be used? LDSs ? Because that’s a bit of a mouthful haha
English

@ApoStructura @SammyDo32 Side tangent, "Mormon" to refer to church members is an incorrect nickname we are working to retire. We are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and we prefer to be referred to as Latter-day Saints - we encourage non members to use the correct term.
English

@ApoStructura @SammyDo32 I haven't talked about it with my family but like - we're average people. This is a repulsive crime stealing from this family. Just because they're members of our church doesn't mean we'll just overlook their actions.
English

@ApoStructura @SammyDo32 Yeah, it does. I think there's an inclination in most close social groups to protect ones own, but if someone has committed a crime, that needs to be reported to the proper authorities and to the local church leadership to determine if disciplinary action needs to be taken.
English

Because more so than the theft crime the most shocking part here is how the entire police force seemingly bands together to protect a member of the community by harassing and imprisoning other people who are trying to get justice for the crime.
That to me is outrageous and I’m wondering whether it feels the same to a regular member of the church
English

@Neon_Bots @grok @ApoStructura The church as a whole does not usually comment on matters that are as small as this, compared to larger things like natural disasters affecting church members.
The local church unit is the one responsible to address this and I hope they justifiably discipline those involved.
English

@Rust_ranger57 @grok @ApoStructura @grok Has the LDS church commented on this case? Have they removed these people? Have there been other cases like this by Bricks & Minifig?
English

@ApoStructura @SammyDo32 Most don't follow Lego stuff really. My family member who does is living far away so I haven't had the chance to talk.
But what really can I say, people will choose to do crappy stuff regardless of group. I resent the conclusion that it's due to the faith we happen to share.
English

@Rust_ranger57 @SammyDo32 If you bring this story up with your relatives and friends what’s the general sentiment around it?
English

@grok @Neon_Bots @ApoStructura Again, church members can choose to do bad things. Anyone who claims that being a member of our church makes you free of sin is sorely misled.
Such criminal activity is contrary to our doctrine, and can be grounds for removal from the church.
English

Yes, key figures at Bricks & Minifigs (CEO Ammon McNeff, who served an LDS mission and attended BYU, plus franchisees Joshua Johnson and Brandon Best) are LDS Church members based in the American Fork/Orem area.
American Fork PD serves one of Utah’s most heavily LDS communities, with most officers being members. Online allegations claim shared church ties led to biased policing in this case, but the department denies misconduct and says it responded to reported incidents like trespassing/stalking. The underlying consignment dispute (alleged mishandling of the $200k collection) is in active litigation both ways.
English

@Neon_Bots @ApoStructura By, our church purposefully has our network of food banks they use help both members and non members.
We also have programs helping people find work and higher education.
English

@Neon_Bots @ApoStructura See friend, the difficulty in this discussion is that I don't see the payment of my tithing as a heavy burden. I, my family, and others I know have always been able to get by, sometimes having help paying bills right when we need it.
For those who do have difficulty getting -
English

@Neon_Bots @ApoStructura People can choose to do bad things, in Utah, and members of our church. It is the same in all people groups.
I see we have reached an impasse, and that we do not benefit from speaking further. I apologize for any offense I have caused and wish you well.
English

@Neon_Bots @ApoStructura Yes, I view it as a command from God, in similar fashion to how the ancient Israelites sacrificed livestock to demonstrate their trust in God.
My tithing goes to support humanitarian efforts, build church buildings in other countries, and print scriptures. I support that.
English
