This is painful to watch. In the video is Nurul Haque Nur, the leader of a small political party in Bangladesh, the Gono Odhikar Parishad [People's Rights Forum]. He was involved in the 2018 student quota protests but not these recent ones. Here he is being brought to court after a five day police remand, barefooted, unable to stand without support and clearly in excruciating pain. His wife interviewed here is saying: "My husband is not a criminal. He was beaten cruelly for 5 days during his remand. He was taken from home on July 20 at 3 in the morning. When they took him he was completely healthy. he was missing for 40 hours. when he was presented to the court on 22nd July he was still relatively well. Now he can't even walk. I don't know how to describe what I'm seeing. we have two small kids. One is 1 year old and the other is 5 years old. My older kid is not even eating (since his dad's arrest). The least you can expect is to see [him] healthy. In this condition what he needs right now is medical treatment. They are not giving him any treatment. He was not even connected to the current movement." The Bangladesh government has now opened up the broadband internet in the capital Dhaka - after closing it as part of its crackdown on student protests. But unless you are connected to the internet by wires (i.e phones/laptops) there remains no internet (though in Gulshan, the exclusive part of Dhaka, there seems to be some WiFi in some areas). The government remains scared.

Extraordinary footage of Bangladesh police violence coming out of the country now that the Government begins to restore internet connections

It is surely time for @UNPeacekeeping to immediately stop Bangladesh from providing peacekeepers to the United Nations until it undertakes an independent investigation of the violence used by the police, military and other para-military groups which has allegedly resulted in nearly 200 deaths of students and other protestors. If they cannot keep peace in Bangladesh, and instead cause killing and maiming, the country's security forces should not be trusted in other countries.

Braving it out ... and blaming the opposition. Hasina's playbook. Will it work? The first indication of whether it will is to see what happens when the internet is restored - the country's ICT minister has said the government will likely put broadband (though not mobile) internet back online tonight. Most people in Bangladesh use mobile phones rather than computers to access social media/internet etc, but nonetheless it will be interesting to see what people being to post and its impact. In the past the Awami League government has managed to arrest its way out of difficult situations, that is to say it arrests hundreds/thousands of opposition activists and that simply stops the opposition from organising protests - and the government may try to do this agains. So far the police are saying that 532 people have been arrested including senior leaders of opposition BNP/Jamaat. In addition, the well respected Prothom Alo newspaper reports that 61,000 people have been charged with violence. It is unlikely that these are are 61,000 "named" people, but by not naming individuals in criminal cases, but by putting a number, the police can effectively arrest anyone they want and show them arrested in relation to one of these cases. A great way of arresting anyone who the authorities see as a troublemaker or threat. This is how it has been done before. However, in the past, it was only opposition activists involved in protests and that is far from the case here - in fact it is not clear at all whether opposition activists and leaders were involved that much with the protests - and so the question is whether the police will start arresting students in large numbers. This may be far more difficult for the government to do and get away with.

On Friday night, July 19th, a group of men identifying themselves as police officers apprehended Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the ongoing student protest, from his friend's residence. They forcibly placed him into a vehicle belonging to the police or Border Guard Bangladesh. Blindfolded and handcuffed, Nahid was taken to an undisclosed location and interrogated. The attached photograph illustrates the brutal methods used during his interrogation, which I have purposely blurred. Nahid was left unconscious on the streets on Sunday morning, July 21st. After regaining some consciousness, he rented a three-wheeler to reach home before being hospitalized. His ordeal continued at the hospital. When journalists visited him for interviews, authorities pressured him to leave, citing safety concerns. “The hospital canceled my admission,” he said, noting that he had to seek treatment under unsafe conditions. I hope this helps you understand the state of affairs in Bangladesh.
