Geriatric adolescent NZ expat. “Left-wing socialist conspiracy theorist”, said an un-reconstructed, well-Asahi-ed Milford neo-con

The other side of this coin: I was loading the cashier belt with all my meats and veggies until I side-eyed the young man (maybe 18 years old) looking confused. The older lady behind me commented on how healthy I eat, to which I responded “to me it’s just normal eating” with a cheeky laugh. The young man then turned to me in his panicked confusion holding up a bag of veggies and asked “what are these sir”. At first I thought he was joking but quickly realized the confusion was real. I replied politely “those are beets my friend”, the lady behind me letting out a snorting laugh saying “not so normal after all”.

The teenager bagging groceries today asked if I wanted my bread on top. I said yes. He nodded seriously and said, "Good call. Structural integrity is everything." Then he arranged my bags like he was building a cathedral. His coworker laughed at him. But my bread arrived home unpunched, my tomatoes unbrushed. Sometimes the people who care too much about small things are exactly who we need.

@SerenaTNZ @MariaSherwood2 In a mission critical environment such as a hospital or a data centre, you have multiple layers of redundant backup systems and you test them regularly. It might not have been the case here, hence the need for a review

@simongerman600 Money can't buy you happiness but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery. - Spike Milligan

"Money can buy happiness" sounds as obvious as "water is wet". Nonetheless, the claim runs counter to the long held misunderstanding that once you earn a certain amount (US$75,000 to be exact) any additional earning doesn't translate into more happiness. In The New Daily I am exploring the origins of this research claim and show in the Australian context just how happy money can make you. The chart below shows that richer people are less likely to experience poor mental health than people on lower incomes. Read the full piece here (no pay wall): thenewdaily.com.au/finance/2025/1…

16% for the AfD is bad news. But the good news: A clear majority for the centre right CDU. And almost 70% for democratic parties in general. So the centre seems to hold. At least in NRW, at least for now.

@cjsbishop These are details. You need to get together on strategy. No, wait. This DID happen under Labour with the cross-party intensification agreement. That your government scrapped as soon as it came into office...

So New Zealanders will now NEVER be able to get cheaper butter, cheese etc, because our milk products will be all owned by an INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION?! It's quite a feat to fuck over an entire country. Fonterra sells iconic brands to French food giant rnz.co.nz/news/business/…

This perspective map shows invasion routes into Russia from the Russian perspective. This is the type of logic that the Kremlin pushes to justify their war in Ukraine. The map hints at what other plans Putin might have.

@NoContextBrits The sorting key is the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code, being GB for the UK, CH for Switzerland and DE for Germany. The people who designed this are as dumb as a bag of hammers…

@allenanalysis Why are you all so painfully dim? It only applies to people who need to apply for a visa. It doesn’t apply to Visa Waiver Travel under ESTA. It’s reimbursable if you stick to the rules

@simongerman600 I've always factored in 15 minutes lurking time for business meetings and 5 for private. Arrive on time for private, 5 minutes early for business, no matter which culture

As a German, for a personal meeting 12 means 12 but for a professional meeting 12 means be 5 minutes early. Any alternative interpretation hurts my little German brain.

Which are the world’s greatest intermodal transportation hubs? The rules: At least three different forms of transport must converge at the same location. Two of those transportation methods must be through, not simply terminating, services. And one of them must be international.

Whether you drive on the left or right side of the road ultimately doesn't matter. I regularly drive in the lefty and in righty countries. Having the steering wheel on different sides of the car makes the transition remarkably easy. That said, I've never crossed a boarder in a car having to adjust while having the "wrong" steering setup. That seems scary to me.
