@ossia Happy Birthday! I owe my entire career to @freeCodeCamp & to this day recommend it to anyone who asks how to get into programming or web dev.
I still remember working through the OG curriculum back in 2015😅
Congrats @ossia - you're an absolute legend 🔥

I'm thrilled to share that this week, freeCodeCamp turned 10 years old. Happy birthday to the community!
Over the past 10 years, we've built:
🏛 An interactive 3,000-hour core curriculum that teaches Math, Programming, and Computer Science
📚 A library of more than 12,000 programming tutorials – and dozens of full-length books – on our publication
📺 A YouTube channel with more than 1,000 free full-length courses. We just hit 10 million subscribers a few days ago.
👐 The kindest, most supportive programming forum on the planet. And we have a similarly kind Discord server, too.
I've prepared this document sharing many of the major curriculum improvements we're working on, and I'd value any thoughts you all have, or questions you may have about it: freecodecamp.org/news/freecodec…
If I get some good questions from you all, I can add them and answers to them to the article.
Thanks and happy coding!

Today marks my 6th year of being a Twitch affiliate
Six years of doing it live!
One morning last week, I took some time to write out the story of what lead me to start streaming
It's long, and a little heavy, but it felt very cathartic to get it all down as I close the page on this chapter of my life
If you're at all curious where this journey began for me, here it is:
Six years ago, in May of 2018, I received a phone call
My father had suffered a massive stroke, was in a coma, and was about to die
Sadly, all hospitals capable of treating him were full, and so that night, on a buzzing, beeping ward, we lost him
The memory of holding his hand, while my brother held his other, will stay with me until the day I die
After 40 years of serving his community as a surgeon, he fulfilled his final wish—his organs were donated, such that even in death the he was able to help a few more folks on their journeys
My father left a massive mark on me. We had our issues, and sometimes struggled to communicate, but his kindness and values had been deeply ingrained within me
When he passed, despite being 23, I was still a child. I had not learned how to be an adult—far from it.
A bittersweet sadness I will forever hold is the fact that, despite knowing that he’d be proud of the man I've become, that the Charlie he knew when he passed would have been very difficult to be proud of in any capacity—I wish I could have honoured him within his lifetime by giving him the gift of watching his troubled son become a resilient man
Alas, it wasn't meant to be. Life!
If I’d been lost and in the dark before he slipped away, I suddenly found myself completely alone, numbingly cold and in a dark cave, that until that point, I hadn’t known existed
For a couple of weeks, I barely left the house. I was jobless, living at my then girlfriends house and seemingly incapable of escaping the hole I’d become trapped in
Then, something happened
Scrolling through my laptop one morning, looking at my endless projects folder, I realized something
First, if I was to become unstuck, it would require me to try and do so
And second, sitting around on my own, overthinking projects and succumbing to my crippling perfectionism was getting me nowhere
I finally had a plan
Instead of repeating the cycle, I was going to try something crazy: I was going to stream on Twitch
At the time, I was greatly inspired by watching @levelsio build and ship Hoodmaps, live on YouTube, in 24 hours
So, I decided I was going to stream ‘The Charlie Starts-up Show—launching a startup in 7 days’
I had about $20 to my name, along with a laptop and a pair of headphones on my girlfriends kitchen table in her tiny apartment
I went down to the local art store, and, using all of my funds, bought 8 pieces of thick green paper and some blue-tack
I blue-tacked them to my wall in a grid, downloaded OBS, watched a couple of setup videos, and fired everything up
And just like that, I was doing it live
What unfolded superseded my expectations in every imaginable way
Going into it, I still felt alone, cold and in the dark, lost within my cave
But now, I had lit a candle, and although dim, it was a beacon of sorts—one that drew in a small but beautiful group of kindhearted folks who wanted to help me get back on my feet and pursue my dreams
Not only was I able to start engaging with the world again, but excitement and optimism had found their way back to my soul, and I pressed onwards
Those early days were remarkable. Within a week, through the stream, I was able to talk to the likes of Pieter Levels, Julian Shapiro (@Julian) and Vlad (@callmevlad), the CEO of Webflow, who went as far as to give me a free 1 year pro membership, and act of kindness that touched me deeply
Out of nowhere, a month later, I saw an ad for a job at Shopify, who were opening a division in New Zealand. I had been working on an ecommerce tool on my stream, so I attached that and hit apply.
Unbelievably to me at the time, I got the job, and with it, I got back on my feet.
Within a few years, I’d gone from a dish washer with no degree, to working at a top tech company, and then as a self taught developer
Streaming hasn’t just been a part of my journey over the last 6 years, for me, in many ways it’s been my journey
It’s invited so much beauty, serendipity and chaos into my life, and I can’t imagine where I would have ended up without it—or more accurately, without the community that helped me back onto my feet and spurred me to keep going
To that community, then and now, I will forever be indebted, and any attempt at capturing the magnitude of my gratitude would be in vain, so to you, my dear friends, I simply say; thank you
Over the years, I’ve done my best to record my streams, in the hope that one day the footage would serve to inspire others—not because of hockey stick growth, or life changing exits, but rather so that if anyone else is alone and cold, in the darkness of their own cave, that they know that they can light a candle, too
Right now I’m going through a lot of change; almost as much as I was 6 years ago. I find myself sleeping on the floor of my office, with a few weeks until I board a one way flight to Europe, with no plans but to hoist my sail and see where the wind takes me
Whatever happens, I trust that as long as I plot my course and set out with a kind heart and my values held tight, I’ll make it through whatever tempest’s lay ahead, and what’s more, I’ll have adventures to tell of when I’m old
Thank you, for listening to my story. I’m writing this on my phone, sat in the locker room of the gym I have my shower in each morning, and despite the dim rumble of a God awful playlist of blown out pop music in the background, I feel I have released a part of me in getting this chapter of my life down into words, just before I close the page and turn to write the next one
To finish, I’d like to share a poem with you, one that I return to in moments like this
One that has lead me to meet many wonderful people, and share incredible memories with them
One that lead me to booking my one way flight with no plans
The one that drove me to share this story with you
Ithaka, C.P. Cavafy
As you set out for Ithaka
hope your road is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians, Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope your road is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you enter harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind—
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and go on learning from their scholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
✌️
