Re: lots of infections around. Acute COVID remains at near saturation levels in the community throughout the year, & long COVID is relatively common (eg, 7% of all adults in the US have had LC), it commonly lasts for years, and is on the increase in recent times. Having LC is known to negatively affect how immunity functions. So, it would not be surprising to see other diseases that rely on normally functioning immunity surge/behave in an unusual way for this reason. Although much needs to be learned about this issue, clearly at a population-level our immune systems are in a different place now to what they were prior to 2020. Immune systems need to be healthy to perform optimally.

@k_eagar @Qantas We were pretty happy to have the Sip valve in our masks as there was no way the mask was coming off. What’s the story @Qantas?

No accurate figures so it's up to the brilliance of @Mike_Honey_ @dbRaevn & a few others to estimate what's going on. This suggests that over 1 million people have C0VID in Oz right now, & that almost half of the entire population has had C0VID in the last 6 months. These numbers are extraordinary.

Australian COVID-19 weekly stats update: Sharp rises in most indicators continue. The Risk Analysis shows a sharp rise in the estimate to 5.2% Currently Infectious, or 1-in-19. Report Link: mike-honey.github.io/covid-19-au-va… 🧵

This continues a streak of landmark papers on chronic COVID incl. how it drives fatigue, cognitive decline & now immune dysfunction. All this double underlines why we must do much more to reduce infections & to support those who have LC or ME/CSF. What more will it take?
Scott Gottlieb, MD 🇺🇸@ScottGottliebMD

Important new study, published today in journal Nature, shows that in people who suffer persistent symptoms of Covid, it may be driven by immune dysregulation where a large disconnect between B and T cell function results in a persistent inflammatory state nature.com/articles/s4159…

The difference in public health COVID messaging between Victoria and other states in Australia is extraordinary. Why should public health messaging for a serious disease depend so much on postcode?

Yes, brilliant and transformative to public health. This is so doable now, does not need to be seen as something for the future.

Many Movie Theatres in Japan 🇯🇵 fixed ventilation & display how clean the air is in each Cinema… Can we do #CleanAir in Australia to reduce #COVID 🦠 spread? YES! WILL WE? Well, it’s up to “leaders” to follow the #science of #CleanAir for health & economic benefits. @Mark_Butler_MP @AnikaWells @JEChalmers @billshortenmp @CHO_WAHealth @VicGovDH @VictorianCHO @NSWCHO @NSWHealth @Mon4Kooyong @MaryAnneThomas

6,500 is an awful lot of premature death in 7 months... there are also many many more than this who get seriously sick but from acute and/or chronic C0VID. We are underplaying this disease. And in so doing perpetuating the problem.

The Covid-19 mortality working group has released our analysis of excess mortality in Australia to 31 July 2023. TLDR: excess mortality is 6% (95% CI: 5-8%) for the first 7 months of 2023, +6,500 excess deaths relative to pre-pandemic expectations actuaries.digital/2023/11/02/cov…

An entire culture, history and people are disappearing under the rubble – buried by the moral cowardice of our political leaders. Artists whose work we will never know. Teachers whose lessons we will never learn. Children whose laughter we will never hear. We must keep raising our voice for an immediate ceasefire. For the universal application of international law. For our shared humanity. For the only path to a just & lasting peace: an end to the occupation of Palestine.

@BrentHodgson @zalisteggall 💯 all this Brent! We really have to ask ourselves why any political leader would not support both truth and transparency in government. Imo it speaks volumes abt how they want to conduct themselves in government. For those in the backseats here is Zali.

Last year, I tabled my Stop the Lies Bill to legislate against misleading & deceptive political & referendum advertising. The Government failed to support it for the referendum. Will they act now? #auspol
