Most people don’t think about how judges are selected. But they should. Because the people interpreting and applying the law play a critical role in how our country functions. In Canada, judges are appointed, not elected.

Alberta’s courts should reflect Albertans. Alongside Premiers Danielle Smith, Doug Ford, Scott Moe, and Francois Legault, we’re calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to bring in a new, collaborative approach to the judicial appointment process. See the letter below 👇

Lisez notre lettre!

Ontario deserves a real say in the appointment of judges making critical decisions on issues like bail reform, which directly impacts public safety in our province. This week, I joined several other premiers writing to Prime Minister Carney asking for judicial reform that respects provincial interests across Canada.

I joined Premiers Smith, Legault, and Ford in calling on Prime Minister Carney to adopt a renewed, collaborative approach to judicial appointments. Canadians deserve a process that reinforces public trust and reflects the full diversity of our provinces. Provinces know their communities best. A meaningful role in judicial appointments ensures our courts reflect each province’s realities. @ABDanielleSmith @fordnation @francoislegault @MarkJCarney

@TheNorthStar55 @echipiuk @ABDanielleSmith Absolutely not. The disaster to the south is more than enough evidence against such a ridiculous notion. They need to be appointed based on merit not who they can buy & win favour with. Smith can’t even choose competent staffers - see Anderson & McAllister as examples

Canada needs to reform how we appoint judges to the superior trial courts and courts of appeal of the provinces, as well as to the Supreme Court of Canada. I am joining with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Quebec Premier François Legault, in writing to Prime Minister Mark Carney requesting a new, collaborative approach, wherein our governments can meaningfully engage in filling judicial positions in our respective jurisdictions. Asking these questions is not about undermining the judiciary. It is about strengthening public confidence. No system is perfect. We need to have this conversation openly. So let’s have the conversation: Should judges be appointed, elected, or is there a better model?
