A big thanks to the leaders of #INDIA! I thank my brother, Hon’ble LOP Thiru. @RahulGandhi, for voicing our concerns against the #Delimitation bill that the BJP tried to rush through without consultation or consensus. I thank respected Madam Tmt. Sonia Gandhi, Thiru. @Kharge, Hon'ble @PinarayiVijayan, Thiru. @ComradeDRaja, Hon'ble @Revanth_Anumula, Hon'ble @Siddaramaiah, Hon'ble @MamataOfficial, Thiru. @YadavAkhilesh, Thiru. @PawarSpeaks, Thiru. @LaluPrasadRJD, Hon'ble @HemantSorenJMM, Hon'ble @OmarAbdullah, Thiru. @ArvindKejriwal, Thiru. @UddhavThackeray, Thiru. @Naveen_Odisha, Thiru. @OfficeOfSSBadal, and all Opposition leaders. They tried to divide us as North and South, to weaken and defeat us, and to redraw India’s political map for their own gain. But #INDIA stood together and defeated their design. This is only the beginning. The blows the BJP will face in the coming days must be far more decisive. For that, we must continue to stand united as one Opposition.

Did the BJP table this bill, fully expecting to fail, so that they could bring in delimitation based on a fresh population census? If yes, and that was expected, why did the Opposition fall for it, given that pop-based delimitation is likely to hurt them way more?

#Delimitation Now the part nobody on DMK social media is telling you. This defeat killed only this version, not delimitation itself. Standard delimitation happens automatically after the first census post-2026 (ongoing 2026/27 census, results by 2027-28), mandated by articles 82 and 170. The 84th amendment freeze expires the moment that census data drops. The mechanics. President appoints a Delimitation Commission (retired SC judge + CEC + state ECs), no parliamentary vote needed. Commission redraws seats based on latest census, orders published in gazette with force of law. Parliament cannot modify or reject, only laid before the houses for information. Courts can review only in narrow cases of manifest arbitrariness, not the seat allocation itself. And it will be purely population based, exactly what south feared. PRS india’s analysis: At 543 seats, tamil nadu drops 39 to 32, kerala 20 to 15, UP gains 9, bihar 6, rajasthan 5. At 848 seats, UP alone gains 63 and bihar 39. South gets crumbs proportionally. Now about that “uniform 50% increase” Shah offered on the floor. It was structurally impossible. Article 81(2)(a) mandates equal population-per-seat ratio across states & Section 8 of the Delimitation Bill forces the commission to use latest census figures. A flat 50% hike breaks both. This is directly unconstitutional. So shah’s “I’ll amend in 1h” was hollow, you can’t amend your way out of a contradiction you just wrote into the same bill. So today’s “victory” is basically this. South rejected a structurally impossible deal for a future where the constitution itself will reduce their share. Post-2026 is much harder to fight, it flows directly from the constitution and the only realistic block (fresh amendment extending the freeze) needs 2/3 in parliament + ratification by half the state legislatures. North-south math makes that nearly impossible. The honest take. BJP’s offer was a trap, either south accepts & gets short changed when the commission applies the population rule, or south rejects & eats the full post 2026 hit. DMK & india bloc made the right short-term call. But stalin’s “tamil nadu defeats delhi” framing is highly misleading. They’ve delayed it, not stopped delimitation. Whatever comes after the 2027 census will hurt south more than what was offered today.
