I have one I read quite recently about crops in the Andes, so it’s something I’m interested in and like talking about. If I misunderstand things, cool. But I’m not gonna be talked down to.

@truculntsuculnt @hellaclitean @lemmingstribes That was a weirdly hostile response, but you brought up Ireland so I argued from that angle and yes the blight effected specifically finger potatoes and not really the others varieties, it was not a hand wave. And please explain how potatoes require more processing than corn.

@truculntsuculnt @hellaclitean @lemmingstribes The Irish peasants in the potato famine were mostly corn farmers who had land set aside as the food they ate, and on that land they grew potatoes, not more corn, for a reason. Obviously blight ruined that plan but that was an issue solved by the andeans with diversification.

@truculntsuculnt @hellaclitean @lemmingstribes If you’re talking a crop for industrial farming I can’t argue with you, but for the small scale autarky, disease can be mitigated with diversification, and potatoes have the benefit of requiring much less processing.

I do think the US was bluffing to get the Soviets to do exactly that, but still.
