@OrdinaryInds We already knew that it would be perfect for consuming content. I find it more interesting to find what the upper limit of a device is. iPhones have been capable of that for so long but the OS / apps are a limiting factor. It's fun to see what the chip can do without that limit.

It's so odd that reviewers are using video editing as a barometer for whether or not people should buy the MacBook Neo. The vast majority of users consume content, not create it and Neo is perfect for that. If you _do_ need video editing, iPhones and iPads have been capable 4k video editors for a while now. We've seen plenty of reviews already stating that Neo handles Final Cut for small projects just fine.

@SebAaltonen @andrewjclare 12GB will definitely be better don't get me wrong, especially with how bad macOS Tahoe is. But 8GB isn't that terrible from my experience.

@SebAaltonen @andrewjclare I did my bachelor 7 years ago with a 8GB dual core i5 MacBook. I could do programming (Linux VMs), light video editing, graphic design (Figma, Sketch), Minecraft just fine. Most browsers put tabs to sleep to not eat through RAM and battery

Things I’ve learned since the Macbook Neo was announced: - Turns out even a $499 MacBook can be controversial. - According to tech twitter, 8gb of ram isn’t enough for note taking, opening up a website and running the ChatGPT app at the same time. - everyone really did want colorful MacBooks - Android users are defending windows - Steve Jobs would have approved this - the iPad Air is cooked - Rest in peace Chromebooks - people think an iPhone chip is bad - If edit 8K video while rendering a 3D animation, while exporting a podcast, running 100 Chrome tabs, Final Cut, Blender, and still checking email like nothing’s happening, during simulating an entire city in a game engine just to test shadows and running four external displays while the fans barely wake up… the Neo is not for you.

@SebAaltonen More like 1 year-old Apple to 2 year old Intel. If we take the iPhone benchmarks, the A18 Pro wins clearly in single core (and I hope the MacBook will be identical for short burst workloads, and hopefully better for sustained ones due to better dissipation)

2x bigger SSD and 2x more RAM at the same price. 256GB SSD + 8GB RAM are the bottlenecks, and we know that already from past experience. Let's wait for benchmarks to see if A18 beats Core i5 1334U. I would assume Apple is faster, but enough to beat 2x bigger RAM/SSD?

@ImSh4yy @DanielLockyer The memory in Apple's SoC is inside the package. All iPhones which had the A18 Pro SoC had 8GB of RAM. More or less than that would mean redesigning, manufacturing, etc. when I think the entire point was to use the existing (leftovers?) SoC without all this work.

Apple has always been stingy with memory, and this is their price ladder to push people (those who even know what memory is) towards the Air. The audience for this don't even know what terminal is, and some little swap here and there isn't a big deal compared to the chrome books they are currently using.

Neo is cool but 8GB of RAM? In this RAM usage inflationary economy? Can barely open a terminal with 32GB these days

@EthanLipnik Nice hover effect. IMO it looks a bit weird that the text turns purple (even though it's the accent color throughout the website). Have you tried leaving it the color it is? Or using the color of the cell instead of purple?

You are intentionally reading the post in bad faith. It was in response to something claiming that Jai is “just another C with different syntax”. This is not true. Obviously Jai is in the family of “C-category derivative systems languages”, to one degree or another. But it goes way beyond a C-like.

No offense to this particular individual but to see a real human being claim that Jai is "nothing like C at all" is disturbing. If a significant % of programmers were to believe that, then our civilization's technology would be safer and more robust if they were replaced with AI.
