This is basically why high speed rail is probably impossible in the United States. It works in Japan because virtually the entire network is elevated, making encounters like this physically impossible.

This might be hard to believe, but In Japan, you can't just "start dating" someone. There is a formal confession. Called "kokuhaku." You say "I like you. Please go out with me." Out loud. To their face. If they say yes, you are now officially dating. Not before. There is no "so… what are we?" phase. Japan skipped it. With a system.

Adam and Steve live in two suburbs and commute into a city by car. They actually live on the exact same road. Steve lives nearby, so has a shorter commute, but is in traffic the whole way. Adam lives further out, so only sees traffic part of the way.
