How did multiple @nytimes editors look at this story and not ask what the “J” stood for? Here’s a hint: It isn’t “Israel.”

@Ike_Saul Maybe, but it's unlikely that he's trying to appeal to normies. He's trying to win a war, and this demeanor is consistent with Hegseth's demeanor since he took office - warriors, not DEI.

The disconnect between Hegseth's demeanor when sharing this anecdote and the general posture most normie Americans have toward war is so vast it's really hard to put into words. 98% of them won't ever see this clip but if they did, they'd really hate it
Acyn@Acyn

Hegseth: I witnessed lethality. I met a junior airman as the sun was going down and a chill was setting on the tarmac, who, when asked what they needed, she simply looked up at me with a sly smile on her face and said, more bombs, sir, and bigger bombs. We will happily oblige her.

@Ike_Saul You'd do yourself a big favor by sticking to long form work, and stay away from reactionary tweets, especially ones from organizations like CNN. Your "slip shows" when you react with "tweet" form communications

A single dose of antibiotics can have lasting effects on your gut microbiome, with changes that last well beyond 4 years. Three types of antibiotics stood out for their long term disruptive impact (3 at left, Figure) @NatureMedicine nature.com/articles/s4159…

Most Democrats are waiting to see how this turns out before taking a position. Those "positions" you posted from Newsom, Shapiro and Booker are really just political positioning allowing them to claim to have been right, regardless of outcome. Fetterman has truly taken a position. @Ike_Saul
U.S. Senator John Fetterman@SenFettermanPA

Every member in the U.S. Senate agrees we cannot allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. I’m baffled why so many are unwilling to support the only action to achieve that. Empty sloganeering vs. commitment to global security — which is it?

@Ike_Saul You can't ignore the impact of: 1) sanctuary cities and 2) the sheer number of illegals. Had the previous administration (and the Democratic party in general) held the line on immigration, the challenges that ICE today has to overcome would be much less.

There is a very obvious point here, which is that the conduct of these ICE officers was totally different from the conduct of ICE officers today. That is literally *the* point — that people (like me) who are totally comfortable with immigration enforcement are ALSO uncomfortable with the violation of basic civil rights and human dignity.
Wall Street Mav@WallStreetMav

Watch this. During the Obama years, CNN did a ride along with ICE as they arrested illegal aliens with criminal histories—and it’s overwhelmingly positive.

@ole_b_peters This sounds like the Pareto principle, which seems to persist over long periods of time. How does ergodicity economics address this apparent reality?

Very high-level and order of magnitude, but: average US household wealth is ~$1,000,000. A household with less ($500k, say) will likely find it hard to move up much; a household with more ($2M, say) will find it easy. 90% of households have less than $2M. (82% less than $1M.)
Bashline@bashline

@ole_b_peters How is it that only “very few” people own more than average wealth? Isn't it 50% by definition?

The Jimmy Kimmel cancellation is actually insane. He is a late night host and comic and the joke he made was hardly even edgy in today’s political culture. We are, again, in a terrible place for speech.

Andrew Cuomo won handily among voters who make less than $50,000 a year. People in the six-figure bracket overwhelmingly broke for Zohran Mamdani. @Olivia_Reingold and Will Rahn break down the irony of Mamdani’s “working-class” campaign.

Terrible situation in Kentucky where at least 10 are dead and many still missing after a tornado outbreak last night. The local National Weather Service office was severely impacted by DOGE cuts, leaving it without an overnight forecaster.

@GavinSBaker Can you show specific examples regarding CA fast food restaurants, min wage and menu displays. I haven't seen any that specify a charge due min. wage, although Some have specified a cost regarding health insurance.

Almost every retailer will follow Amazon and itemize the “tariff costs” anywhere a price is shown - on websites, price tags and receipts. Everywhere. It is not political - it is just corporations protecting their own brands and acting in their own competitive best interests. Same thing happened with minimum wage and restaurants in California. The menus showed the “price increase due to the higher minimum wage.”
