@robertoblake Why who's saying that? Up here in Canada, many young people are sadly realizing they may be a homeowner at 40-50, if ever. That's just buying...not paid off. Hardwork/effort will always be important, but disposable income is slipping away.

Why does everyone expect to be able to be single and somehow a homeowner at like 25 now? And expect an $85K a year starting salary or something? Am I missing something?

@saylordocs @robnolte It would be considered a capital loss yes; however, in the United States you could buy it back at that lower price and still have it be considered a capital loss (wash sale rule doesn't apply). In Canada, it would not still be considered a capital loss.
