#NaserBakrzadeh, a Kurdish political prisoner on the verge of execution in Iran, has issued a desperate cry for help from behind the walls of Urmia Prison. The 26-year-old sent a voice message—one he fears may be his last—detailing the agonizing situation and profound injustice he faces.
Bakrzadeh says he was arrested when he was only 23, at what he calls "the very peak of my dreams and longing for life." He has since endured years of captivity, been subjected to severe torture in the custody of the IRGC’s intelligence organization, and been unjustly sentenced to death three times without credible evidence. While the Supreme Court has confirmed the latest verdict, the fact that the first two sentences were overturned stands as testimony to his innocence and the sham nature of the trials.
Bakrzadeh says his parents have endured a "living death" since the day of his arrest; the weight of the ordeal has aged them beyond their years, leaving them broken. As their only son and the older brother to two younger sisters, he had put his studies on hold to lift the financial burden from his father’s shoulders. He reveals he was just days away from a marriage proposal when he was arrested. For four years, his betrothed has waited for him faithfully, and now, he is paralyzed by the agonizing task of telling her that his execution is imminent.
"The weight of a death sentence may be beyond the understanding of most people, but it is a burden that no one and nothing can endure. This sentence has already killed me; it has shattered me. I feel myself dying with every passing moment, and it has brought my family to their knees. Please, do not simply turn away from this message; today it is my turn, but tomorrow it will be another’s," Bakrzadeh says, choking back tears.
He concludes with a final plea: "My first 'crime' was being a Kurd, and my second was being a Sunni. Help me. I am not the first, and I will not be the last."
