We were gravely disappointed to read last week's statement by Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen that appears to be giving a pass to Google's Android Developer Verification Program.

We implore the European Commission to change course and fulfill their mission to enforce the law and protect their consumers, businesses, and governments from this gross assault on digital freedom.

The ADV program is a flagrant violation of both the spirit and the letter of the Digital Markets Act behind a vague and unsupported smokescreen of "security" — the same cover that Apple has used to successfully evade their own obligations under the act with impunity.

Google's move threatens to entrench themselves forever as a gatekeeper for all Android software, everywhere in the world.

At this very moment when Europe is mired in an existential struggle to establish their digital sovereignty and protect their consumers and businesses from the expanding menace of Big Tech,

When it is activated in September, ADV will non-consensually lock all Android users into using only software from Google-approved developers.

📣Starting today, developers who distribute apps outside of Google Play can undergo verification and register their apps on the Android Developer Console. Although we're opening up verification tools today, the user-side protections won't go live until September this year in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand (global expansion to come in 2027). As a reminder, if you choose not to register your app, power users will still be able to install it via ADB or the new advanced flow that we recently detailed. If you do register, then the user experience of installing your app will stay exactly the same.
