@SCShipyards @GiddyOnGaming Blaming the hypothetical makes as much sense as blaming the circumstances of a real world problem. These are your choices. Choosing red is choosing individual survival over an significantly better outcome, as well as selecting for selfishness in the case of success.

This twitter classic "red button / blue button" [everyone who picks blue dies unless more than 50% do; everyone who picks red lives] question is cursed but we've learned a lot about people since it went around on the timeline the last time First to get this out of the way - there is zero actual reason to push blue - none - there is no "payoff to cooperation" being modeled since the payoff on offer - not dying - is the same for both choices. The only rational reason to pick blue is that you *hope* less than 50% of people pick blue so you can end your life and escape the person who is putting you in contrived hypotheticals for his own amusement With that out of the way - what we've learned in the 2 years since this hit the timeline the first time is that many, many people are simply next token predictors and when they see this example they say they will pick the "cooperative" choice (which isn't actually that!) We have also learned that when confronted with the stupidity of this position, they will simply costlessly double down and "argue" about it forever rather than admit error Really, the question is extremely revealing

Further, if their answer is influenced by signaling as suggested, why wouldn't they also signal with the real thing, even if they can't prove it definitively in either case?

As a game theory question, it’s boring and easy. As a political question, it’s fascinating and reveals a great deal about why democracies struggle. Superficially, blue looks like the collectivist, selfless, moral answer. And as you’d expect, plenty of people not only assumed that to be true, but moralized aggressively at those who understand that’s not factually true. Anyone who picks red is guaranteed to live, including if everyone does it. It’s objectively the better and more moral choice for most and to recommend to others. Blue is a kind of stochastic suicide button.

If <50% of people select blue, there are up to 50% casualties. If 100% of people select red, there are zero casualties. Can you achieve 100% coordination without communication?

@isgoodactually @MaxRadniecki @justalexoki Except Blue wins constantly when this problem is posed. The pure answer and the pragmatic answer diverge. If human nature fit your model, we would all agree. The very fact we are having this discussion means Red is not the obvious or trivial solution.
