@DNutz9196 @elonmusk @vonderleyen Isn’t democracy “the foundation of freedom” as Elon describes? Should the USA become more or less democratic as a general goal over time? Which would you choose?

@elonmusk @vonderleyen If the US followed this principle, Trump never would have become President after the 2016 election (since he lost the popular vote; aka “directly by the people”).

His first major text describes protecting the climate, welcoming migrants and pursuing economic justice as sacred obligations. To admirers Pope Leo XIV is a compassionate reformer; to critics, the “commie” or “woke pope” econ.st/47Lk2pM Photo: Getty Images

Today student representatives spoke with elected officials about steps that can be taken to strengthen the Tuition Limit Policy, and the urgent need for intentional government action and investment to stabilize our post secondary institutions. Thank you @rparmar_BC @RickGlumacBC and @JagrupBrar1 for the great conversation.
Ravi Parmar@rparmar_BC

The future of BC is sat right at this table. We met with the BC Federation of students (@TheBCFS), discussing their vision for the BC of today and tomorrow. We will always make time for the next generation. #bcpoli

Federation of Canadian Municipalities
Earlier today, FCM’s Big City Mayors’ Caucus connected with Minister of Housing and Infrastructure, @gregorrobertson, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and National Revenue, @TurnbullWhitby. On the agenda: bail reform, Build Canada Homes and the importance of streamlined, predictable funding for municipalities to advance Canada’s infrastructure and housing goals. Thank you both for your time.

@TheEconomist The author needs to refresh the lingo here. The article is about “mega-regions” (a term popularized by Richard Florida 10+ years ago). The word “cluster” when referring to cities is supposed to mean geographic proximity of industries within similar sectors (M. Porter, 1990)

@VibrantVictoria Curious what the objections might be? It’s not hindering any views. Could be a major injection of property tax for Oak Bay to help manage infrastructure deficit. Frees up larger homes if empty-nesters downsize into it. Allows seniors to stay in OB. List goes on..

🔹Oak Bay say whut?: 6-acres of waterfront land promoted as site for three highrise towers🔹 Butchart Point is the name of three parcels that are up for grabs on Oak Bay’s oceanfront near the Oak Bay Beach Hotel complex. Marketed by Sotheby’s agents Logan Wilson, Brayden Klein, and Thomas Pye, the more than six acres of land is promoted as having the potential to deliver nearly 600 units of housing, which would help meet Oak Bay’s housing quota as set by the provincial government. No price for the parcels has been identified in materials forwarded to Vibrant. What do you think of highrise density as depicted here, along the Oak Bay waterfront? Let us know in the comments below. #oakbay

@MarkJCarney @DarrylWavepoint All politicians should turn off comments on their posts. 99.9% of comments on posts like this are just pure drivel that the politician in question will never see or read. So what’s the point? Bots and blue check morons that want to feel important by commenting. Turn it off

Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1. Canada has made vital progress to stop the scourge of fentanyl in North America. We are committed to continuing to work with the United States to save lives and protect communities in both our countries. We are building Canada strong. The federal government, provinces and territories are making significant progress in building one Canadian economy. We are poised to build a series of major new projects in the national interest. We are strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world.

@paulg @ycombinator No. I think they’re just saying “tax them properly” once they get to a certain level. Not that complicated as even the US has done this in our lifetimes. The Milton Friedman economic model may have worked well in an industrial age but doesn’t quite work for digital/intangible

Few of them realize it, but people who say "I don’t think that we should have billionaires" are also saying "I don't think there should be startups," because successful startups inevitably produce billionaires. paulgraham.com/richnow.html

@Lordpippin_ @gilmcgowan Terrible take. What if every province behaved like this? Also, what’s the point of having provinces anyways.. The Norwegian Ambassador asked me why Canada is so uncoordinated compared to their wealthy country. This is a good example as to why they feel that way.

@gilmcgowan Well she has my support, none of the demands she set out are unreasonable so if the rest of Canada finds them unacceptable then we have nothing in common so it makes sense to go our separate ways.

This what we in the labour movement call bargaining in bad faith. Smith sets out demands that she knows will be unacceptable to the rest of the country, then threatens Alberta separation if those demands are not met. She is deliberately courting confrontation. #ableg #cdnpoli

Cities in BC are desperate for new hotels. Hotel rooms reduce pressure on rental housing, bring huge economic benefits, and support vibrancy downtown. BUT - city staff recommend council reject this 12-story building (Pandora/Government) because it is "too tall." Thoughts? #yyj

@DavidColetto Stop calling Mark Carney & the liberals "centre-left" David. Carney is an eco extremist & the party contains a number of far-left liberals. There is nothing "centre" about them! Yes they did steal a lot of ideas from the CPC platform however.

As the world gets more precarious, politics is becoming more emotional. The 2025 Canadian election showed how even centre-left leaders can win by borrowing populist strategies—without giving in to fear or division. Here’s how Mark Carney did it:

@uytaelee The issue with D is it needs the word “new” otherwise it confuses with property tax, a necessity for running cities. Owners of appreciating assets should be taxed to ensure the infrastructure they depend on can be maintained.
