@mooninabucket The mag name "Poets & Writers" has always bugged me. It seems insulting to poets. Imagine if it were called "Novelists & Writers."

@juscarts I was on food stamps during the first few months of my MFA. I wasn't a TA. I got off food stamps after getting a Work Study position and a part-time job at a convenience store.

When people talk about MFAs being for rich people, I think about how during the first semester of my MFA, we all got together & figured out how to apply for food stamps.

@Perez_Writes Wow! I've never known anyone with that many MFAs. I do know someone who got a poetry MFA from Iowa and then immediately got another poetry MFA from UMass-Amherst. She ended up getting a Rhet/Comp doctorate and is now a state poet laureate.

Back when I got my MFA, some of my classmates went to other programs as soon as they graduated. Fiction writers getting poetry MFAs back to back, etc. Fully funded, too. I know some folks with 5, 6 MFAs. Working class writers should run this gimmick if it's still a thing.

@Hotshot_Movie The Godfather is a great book. It was the world's bestseller, Bible aside, when Puzzo and Coppola adapted it.

When I was working on Sideways (which was adapted from a book), I asked the director, Alexander if the book were any good. "No it sucks. You don't adapt great books. You adapt shitty books that have an interesting premise, or a kernel of something that you can exploit and improve. Good books don't make good movies. You have to build a screenplay from the ground up. And nobody is gonna be mad at me for changing the details of a Rex Pickett novel. But God help you if you try to change 2 words in the Lord of the Rings." Brilliant dude.

My boy is 6’1, in insane shape (1:27 NYC half), good job, actually funny… and has completely tapped out of dating. Got his heart broken once a year ago and just never came back the same. Hasn’t been on a date or done anything in like 8 months. Now it’s just video games, bars with the boys, and “it is what it is.” He refuses to talk to women when out, says dating apps are “cooked” (not wrong), and basically just thinks women are the issue. I’ve tried to help several times, but what can we do?
