@ICWR This was between 1230-1pm Eastern time, one hour behind of our local time. My phone showed 5 miles from PR, but tagged me at Abuelas Sin Fronteras, if that helps. You could follow the course of the Royal Caribbean Vision of the Seas.

Pretty cool waterspout that I filmed from our cruise ship near Puerto Rico. It lasted around 15-30 minutes and was gone!!

#Gibraltar - 27/01 - very poor conditions out there now with winds blowing up to Gale force across the area - generating some significant water devils (sometimes called waterspouts - but not thunderstorm related) over the East side where descending rotors are causing severe turbulence on the water - great footage thanks to follower Melanie Avellano. @Emokwx You are welcome. Sometimes steam devils do extend into low-base convective cloud. This is what confuses the public because they look like waterspouts, but they are not. One way to distinguish them is to look for the characteristic "spray ring" near the surface.

@ICWR Thanks for the explanation, but I’m still confused since the pictures and definition don’t seem to match the video. This one is clearly connected to a CB while a steam devil doesn’t appear to be.

Lowkey confused how these are not counted as waterspouts, but the same thing on the Great Lakes is.

Winter waterspouts aren’t terribly rare; they do happen in setups like this, where extremely cold temperatures are blowing over a relatively warmer body of water.
