@Acts17David @JayDyer I’m so glad you’re here to set the record straight! Clearly the church fathers were clueless

@Dark_Justice_21 @vaticansillo @whpub Where does 1 Clement ever say that Paul and Peter are leaders in the church at Rome? The letter treats them symmetrically as shared apostolic heroes for the broader church, with no mention of them residing in, founding, overseeing, or leading the church in Rome.

@JeradMac @vaticansillo @whpub exactly! Clement, Paul they use the term "elder/presbyter" and "bishop" interchangeably and Peter said he is a fellow elder in 1 Pet.5:1, if he was an elder and apostolic people such as clement and paul use "elder" interchangeably with "bishop" then Peter was a BISHOP clear?

@Dark_Justice_21 @vaticansillo @whpub Got it. My mistake. I thought you were arguing that Clement of Rome said that Peter was the first Pope. Clement never says that Peter is the first bishop at Rome either. If using 1 Clement, then your argument would also have to be that Paul was also the first bishop.

@JeradMac @vaticansillo @whpub My first post is a response to the OP about Peter NOT BEING THE FIRST BISHOP OF ROME my first reply had nothing to do with “primacy like a pope”! If you understood it this way then the fault is on you and your poor comprehension Geez 😂

@Dark_Justice_21 @vaticansillo @whpub "Iraneus, clement and Ignatius must have been wrong eh" Your original post implied that Clement of Rome wrote that Peter was the first bishop with primacy like a Pope. That was your claim. Your claim is false.

@JeradMac @vaticansillo @whpub there a lot of things Clement did not say, to argue they must be false because clement did not say it is false, its called an argument from silence! Clement never named the other apostles aside from Peter and Paul, does that mean there are only 2 apostles? NO! get my point?

@JeradMac @tabre @LowStudies @ChristandGuitar I never referenced the Talmud and Origen is talking about idols, we can know that because Christians most definitely had frescoes of saints and biblical stories and crosses in their churches. So either Origen was lying or he meant idols.

This conversation between Gavin Ortlund and Fr. Stephen De Young provided excellent clarification between Protestantism and Eastern Orthodoxy. Some thoughts: - De Young was quick to frame Ortlund's refusal to accept EO as the "one true church" as simple emotionalism. I think this is still cope for not understanding how someone could intellectually not agree with EO. Gavin does offer clarification, but I'm not convinced that it stuck very well for De Young. - For most of the video, Ortlund is asking the same exact question (Are Protestants "real" Christians?) multiple times with different wording, with De Young dancing around a non-conclusive answer. He did finally answer with what I've suspected for a while: The answer is yes, but EO refuse to say "yes" because they don't want to give people a reason to leave the church. - I really really appreciate how candid these two were able to be - I love that they were able to end the video with sharing the Gospel I highly recommend watching this. It's actually a very positive and informative conversation.

@Dark_Justice_21 @vaticansillo @whpub Does he say anything that would resemble that he thought Peter was the highest leader in the church and that he held a special office over all of the other bishops that would be passed down to the next guy? No, he doesn't. Peter was not the 1st Pope.

@forsman_josh @tabre @LowStudies @ChristandGuitar Origen was later condomened as a heretic. However, it was not because of his views on images in worship. He uses very strong language to say that Christians do not use images to facilitate worship. I think we can trust him over the Talmud.

@JeradMac @tabre @LowStudies @ChristandGuitar There are multiple examples of antenicene Christian witnesses to praying to saints. You think they kept relics of saints but treated them as decorations? Hermas and Hippolytus right off the bat. There are multiple papyrus fragments from the 200s that reference intercession

@forsman_josh @tabre @LowStudies @ChristandGuitar I can tell the difference. You missed the point. You said that kissing and praying through an image or statue is not worship. However, I bet if you saw a Buddhist kissing and praying to a statue of Buddha you would automactically call it worship.

@Dark_Justice_21 @vaticansillo @whpub Catholic doctrine (e.g., from the First Vatican Council's Pastor Aeternus) teaches papal supremacy: the Pope has full, supreme, immediate, and universal power over the Church as its visible head and pastor. He is the chief bishop with jurisdiction over all other bishops.
