Nobody but Jesus Christ can decide on our behaves who is and who is not one of His followers. Jesus Christ gave us litmus tests to discern who His followers (aka Christians, disciples) are: John 13: 34-35 (KJV): "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." John 14: 15 (KJV): "If ye love me, keep my commandments." (Context: spoken to His disciples.) Matthew 28: 19-20 (Great Commission, KJV): "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you..." Keeping His moral law (e.g., the commandments in Matthew 19: 17-19) and living out His words are essential. Matthew 16: 24 (KJV): "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." Parallel in Luke 9:23: "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 14: 26 (KJV): "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." (Here "hate" means to love less by comparison, not literal hatred.) Sell and give to the poor for perfection in following (to the rich young ruler, as an example): Matthew 19: 21 (KJV): "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." Known by Their Fruits Matthew 7: 16-20 (KJV): "Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them." John 15:1-8 (KJV): "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. ... Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. ... Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples." He Commanded Against Hypocritical Judging Matthew 7:1-5 (KJV): "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." He Commanded Mercy and Forgiveness: Matthew 5:7 (KJV): "Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy." (Beatitudes, part of discipleship.) Matthew 6: 14-15 (KJV): "For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." So when someone says you are not a Christian, apply the above to yourself, and you can let Jesus Christ, your Lord, and Savior decide.
