In soccer, you can get kicked out of a game and then suspended for the next game for accidentally stepping on someone's foot. In American Football, you pretty much have to get in a legit fight, bump a ref, get multiple unsportsmanlike penalties, etc to get kicked out of a game, AND you still get to play the next game in all likelihood, unless it was really flagrant. This is why there is such a gulf between how most Americans view this silly red card nonsense, and apparently the rest of the world. Combine that with all the diving and drama queen reactions we see in soccer, it's no wonder it just doesn't catch on in the U.S.

@jltho @Mike556553251 So checking for point of contact then. It also says ‘ in general it should’ not that you must. The red card hasn’t been overturned so clearly the VAR got it right.

It was a no-call on the field. VAR then relied on slow-motion and freeze frames, contrary to FIFA guidance, to portray the challenge as excessively forceful and dangerous. They also failed to show the full sequence. Balogun was airborne because Bosnia fouled him first. They only showed the moment his right foot came down, stripping away the context that led to the contact.

To all the Europeans clutching their pearls over this after spending the last several days Eurosplaining the sport to us, let me explain it to you. Even if Balogun deserved a red (he didn’t), the referee misused VAR under FIFA’s own rules. That resulted in a red card that couldn’t be appealed. FIFA then correctly used Article 27 to review and suspend the ban because the initial VAR error led to an unappealable decision.

This makes a mockery of the whole tournament. If the USMNT win, Belgium will have every right to feel cheated, meanwhile the USA’s victory - by their best ever generation of players - will forever be tainted by accusations of favouritism and corruption. It’s bad for everyone.

@SamJDean @JPW_NBCSports “He got a red card and the VAR concluded that it was a red card.” Incorrect. He got nothing from the on field referee. VAR improperly intervened by only showing a slo-mo replay and suggested the referee change his initial on-field decision. Bad process overall but correct result.

Norway manager Stale Solbakken with a very strong reponse to Folarin Balogun's red card being suspended. "It is a big mistake by FIFA. It is not a great conclusion. He got a red card and the VAR concluded that it was a red card. That means you are suspended for one game. "I think what is really bad about that situation is, if the USA beat Belgium, they will always have that extra thing about it. "The Belgians will be furious. What about the next red card? What happens there? Will some committee take it away? It’s a bad, bad, bad, bad decision that will hurt the World Cup and the United States."

@SamJDean @peterrutzler The problem is that VAR used things in a way that is explicitly outlawed. So the outrage should be at FIFA for not rescinding it immedialtely after the game

@RichardMotzkin @ussoccer There’s no appeal process for a red card you half wit. The ref card stands and the ban is suspended.

Richard Motzkin@RichardMotzkin·
That is incorrect. There is an appeal process via the Disciplinary Committee, @ussoccer went through it and, in my opinion, the correct result was achieved due to an incorrect application of the VAR rules, general equity and past precedent. As for Belgium, they should not be benefitted by a wrong decision nor should they want to play a short-handed team. All countries in a World Cup tournament should have confidence in their team and desire to beat an opponent at full strength, simple.
D v H@DvH_NorthEast

@RichardMotzkin @FIFAcom @balogun @USMNT Absolute nonsense. Wether it's a sending off or not, he was shown a red card. There's no appeal during the tournament so he should be banned. This is more corruption from FIFA, but we shouldn't be surprised.

Disappointing take blinded by nationalistic bias. The team is not without quality - Enciso, Gill etc But they are/were shameful, awful, anti-football & the World Cup is better without them. And let’s not pretend that they qualified for 2030 because they are a talented team- Paraguay has qualified automatically for the 2030 World Cup because it will host one of the three centenary celebration matches. (Hopefully without Velazquez, Caceres & Galarza - all trashbags.)

Very disappointed at how people have viewed Paraguay’s performance as “dirty” because they gave the best team in the world a huge scare and didn’t allow them to score from open play. This is the knockout stage of the biggest tournament in the world. You try to win at all costs.
Ralph Hannah@paraguayralph

Wasn’t to be for Paraguay 🇵🇾 who stopped France 🇫🇷 in open play for much of the game But, in what had to be a flawless performance, a foul inside the box gave Mbappé the chance to sentence the Albirroja to elimination from the spot

The difference between Belgium and the United States is that in the United States we always want to beat the best. The US Mens team wouldnt have even taken the field if Belgiums best player was unfairly suspended. Apparently Belgium wants the easy way out Very sad European behavior
Fabrizio Romano@FabrizioRomano

🚨⚠️ OFFICIAL: Belgian Federation statement on Folarin Balogun red card case, saying they are “astonished”. “The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) is astonished by FIFA's decision to declare suspended United States player Folarin Balogun eligible to play in the USA–Belgium match on Monday, 6 July at 5:00 p.m. (Seattle time). FIFA bases its decision on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This provision states that the FIFA Disciplinary Committee may decide to suspend the enforcement of a previously imposed disciplinary sanction. However, Article 66.4 of the same FIFA Disciplinary Code clearly provides that a red card (sending-off) automatically results in a suspension for the team's next match, as has been the case for all previous red cards issued during this FIFA World Cup. Furthermore, and irrespective of the above, the decision is in direct contradiction with the provisions of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations, as set out in Article 10.5: "If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second caution), they will automatically be suspended from their team's subsequent match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed.” The automatic nature of such a suspension was also explicitly reaffirmed in FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was distributed to all participating member associations on 12 May 2026. The same rule is reiterated at every FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Coordination Meeting prior to each match and is included in all FIFA World Cup 2026 workshop presentations. ❗️In order to safeguard the legitimate rights of all participating teams and to protect the fundamental principles of fair play in our sport, both at this FIFA World Cup and at future editions of the tournament, the RBFA is investigating all potential options.”

So by suspending the “red card” they are admitting without admitting, that the decision was absolutely wrong (which we knew). But to do this 24 hours before the game is quite a thing and will create a stir in Belgium no doubt. Right outcome, wrong process. Crazy turn of events.
