What promises? The “founding fathers” were a slave owning oligarchy and that “revolution” was a counter-revolution. If your politics are based on trying to recover some inherent good in the idea of a genocidal settler colony that is extremely concerning.

the civil war was an attempt to realize the (unkept) promises of the first revolution. reconstruction was supposed to be the transition. the counterrevolutionaries killed lincoln, recaptured the state, and built the modern police, judicial system, electoral maps, and prisons.
