It was meant to honor breakthroughs that didn’t fit existing categories. It went to the visual effects of The Poseidon Adventure, Ben Burtt for creating R2-D2's sound and "voice" in Star Wars, and Richard Williams for his work on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The last recipient was Toy Story. 30 years ago! Now, with his performance as Rocky in Project Hail Mary, the same issue is back. It doesn’t fit neatly into acting, voice work, or VFX. Is there a real chance for this kind of recognition for James Ortiz, who performed Rocky not just with his voice but physically, working the puppet and acting alongside Ryan Gosling?

At the time, Peter Jackson was stating in interviews that he believed Serkis was eligible for Supporting and should win. I don’t recall a push for a special achievement Oscar, which would have included Serkis.
