@Theo47102867 Well maybe if we stop calling it affordable housing and just let people build whatever then it’d be better. People mad they can’t build in their own backyard so no one can

@ColbyMannionNJ Bruh, there’s no way that this won’t bring in more in taxation than it causes NJ to spend. Not only was the sales tax already raised but now with the hefty train tickets. Smart leadership finds a win win, but clearly we had very bad leadership and still do.

New Jersey taxpayers are footing a $26 million bill, only for FIFA to brand it the “New York World Cup” while every game is played in New Jersey. Why should we the taxpayers, fund false advertising while we’re already suffering NJ’s high costs?

@Colin_d_m If this was a business, people would be saying their extorting the consumer for profit because she already raised the sales tax

All of these other cities are benefiting from a tax windfall from the matches. New Jersey is literally just hosting the games but solely responsible for transit, logistics, and security. NYC is getting all the economic stimulus. Sherrill has the right to be pissed at Murphy.

@unusual_whales The Democrats running my state are nuts to charge $150 Bucks for a $12.90 ticket, but other states aren't Gouging at all x.com/i/status/20452…

@CahnEmily We're not making dumb comments. NJT already received $10,000,000 from Trump and $3,500,000 from the organizing committee for this. And now Sherrill is DEMANDING an addition $48,000,000 or she'll charge $150 a ticket. The costs are nowhere near that. It's a shakedown.

I am so sick of people who have no idea what they’re talking about making dumb comments like this. The entire NJ transit system has to be diverted for 4 hours for multiple games. That, plus the added security costs, overtime pay, etc etc, makes it insanely expensive.

transatlantic flights cost as low as 190$ a person yet @NJTRANSIT argues it costs them 150$ a person to provide an 18 mi train ride?

@CahnEmily For NJ, hosting 8 games, the economic benefit is enormous. $3.3B in economic activity, 1.2M visitors, $1.7B in direct spending, $432M in sales tax. These are public projections available from multiple sources. This is Mikie selling a narrative as a money saver. 🤣🤣🤣

@StatBoy_Steven @jfazli @PhantomCyberTr @RepNellie Also, NFL games at MetLife are usually attended by people who already live in the area and pay taxes, the World Cup adds individuals who do not live in the area or pay taxes; it would make sense to require additional compensation to offset the strain (not much of a "stat boy")

I thought Nj transit operated on a fixed price not one that changes with demand. What was the point of raising the sales tax on tourists if your just going to price gouge the tourists on train tickets. Look I’m happy she doesn’t wanna raise taxes but this a shady way to run NJ. And Ubers a private company, government is the one that is supposed to protect consumers from price gouging not participating in it.

@PhantomCyberTr @DerTitanOlliK @GovSherrillNJ It’s not extortion. Prices rise alongside demand. You don’t like, then walk. There are other options. I bet you complain about Uber drivers having higher prices than usual on New Year’s Eve too.

Governor Mikie Sherrill
Governor Mikie Sherrill@GovSherrillNJ·
New Jersey is ready and excited to host eight FIFA World Cup matches this summer – including the World Cup Final. Since I took office, my Administration has been working to prepare for the biggest sporting event our state has ever seen – and today, NJ TRANSIT released their Mobility Plan to move 40,000 fans to and from each match safely and efficiently. In the FIFA World Cup agreement that my Administration inherited, FIFA put zero dollars towards transporting World Cup fans. It also eliminated parking at MetLife Stadium, putting the burden of transporting four times more matchday riders than typical for an event at the stadium on NJ TRANSIT. This agreement will cost NJ TRANSIT at least $48 million, while FIFA is positioned to make $11 billion during the World Cup. As I have said repeatedly, FIFA should cover the cost of transporting its fans. If it won’t, we will not be subsidizing World Cup ticket holders on the backs of New Jerseyans who rely on NJ TRANSIT every day.

@PhantomCyberTr @GovSherrillNJ This is the cost of “normal prices” without the subsidy. NJ commuters should not have to pay for ticket discounts for visiting football fans.

@DerTitanOlliK @PhantomCyberTr @GovSherrillNJ There’s no $150 in her post. I personally don’t care if she charges stupid FIFA fans out the ass for the transport though. More money for her state, why wouldn’t she do it? Not like they’re going to cancel their tickets and boycott the matches, they’re all sold out.

NJ Transit has a good plan to move their 40,000 people to and from the World Cup. Yes, sure, it's a bit pricy, but you get what you pay for in life. If there's going to be an issue with the World Cup transportation, my prediction is that it doesn't come from the 40,000 people NJ Transit is moving, but the 46,000 that are being moved by FIFA. idk, time will tell.
Margaret Fleming@mgfleming12

FIFA released a spicy statement from World Cup COO Heimo Schirgi responding to NJ Transit’s $150 roundtrip train announcement, and shouted out other cities who are keeping public transit cheap. “The NJ Transit current pricing model will have a chilling effect,” Schirgi says.

@jfazli @StatBoy_Steven @RepNellie Thank you. My favorite is that they already got 10 million federally but are demanding 48 million more. What are they buying new trains just for the 8 games? Surely it’s can’t possibly cost that much

@StatBoy_Steven @RepNellie Exactly! I have no dog in this fight but NJT / Governor Sherrill's repeated claims that it will cost them "At least $48 million" for trains for 8 games are so demonstrably ridiculously false, FIFA doesn't even know what to do or say. She can't even do shakedown correctly.

These are actually all valid points. However I still think trying to get FIFA to pay for transportation is absurd and charging $150 a ticket is ridiculous. And I need a rational explanation of how this can possibly cost $48million That said, Nj failed to make a sound deal with NY and FIFA and that NJ fault for electing terrible leaders

@mgfleming12 Everyone here doesn’t even understand 1. Some of these other cities are putting the cost on the tax payers 2. This train is already subsidized and does not run as much as is needed for the event 3. Jersey does not get the economic trade off benefit bc they’re coming from nyc

@GovSherrillNJ I’m a democrat, but this shows honestly how incompetent Democrats are at governing. I’m confident that Ron DeSantis would have this figured out. I don’t understand how does it cost $48 million to do this. It’s 9 miles from Manhattan to the Meadowlands.
