CB gold reserve reshuffling flew under the radar recently. On February 20th, the Russian CB revealed that Russia sold 300,000 ounces of gold reserves to finance the war in Ukraine. More recently, Poland – the largest gold purchaser in the past year – unveiled a new plan to sell some of the gold reserves in order to finance defense spending in general and F-35s in particular. While two CBs selling gold does not make a trend, it definitely shook gold bugs’ confidence and may help explain gold’s recent weakness.

Yesterday, on the eve of the Iranian New Year (Nowruz), the Islamic Republic hanged five teenagers who had been detained during the January protests in the cities of Qom and Ilam. Today, 18-year-old Melika Azizi from the city of Rasht, who was arrested for burning regime symbols during the protests, faces imminent execution in Rasht prison on the charge of Moharebeh (waging war against Allah).

The simplicity of Iranian leaders is stunning too. In a country with dazzling art, most of them dress humbly, seem to live austere lives, share their risks with the masses. No leaders oppressing the people can walk among them and be approached on whim. Truly mind-boggling.
