Laiana McClinton (Junior) doubles up at the FHSAA Class 4A State Championships winning the 100 and 200 meter dash for the sprint double. Won the 100 meter dash in a blazing time of 11.75 into a -2.5 headwind and the 200 in 23.67 into a -1.3 headwind. Awesome job 👏👏👏 #trackandfield #sprinter #speedtrainer

I’m a BIG fan of T&F obviously but you nailed it. The “all football players should run track” thing assumes the team has coaches who have a clue. I watched in absolute horror last year as our track team was running stadiums and doing HIIT circuits two days out of a meet while I was on the other field with our 🏈 program running a high performance speed and power program. I shared that note with my friend @HFJumps and he said “no offense but when the strength coach is running a better track program than the track coach…that’s a bad thing”

Agreed. These also assume the HS track program is any good. I was a sprinter/thrower in high school. We never ran shorter than 200m in practice. It helped, but if your main sport (Football) requires you to dominate in the 5-20 yard range, you should probably spend more time improving performance in that range.
Ross Garner@CoachRGarner

Just because a football player has a good 40y doesn’t mean they’re going to have a good 100m Just because they run track doesn’t mean they’ll get a faster 40 either

@Tier1athlete You may time the sprints and call out the numbers as the athletes run so they can set pace, but don’t record them. For some workouts timing isn’t really necessary…

@Tier1athlete I leaned something new.. never Heard of the switch drill being referred to as a boom. I like the drill because it helps develop coordinated moments. It ties directly into acceleration mechanics

I am not a fan of boom booms sprint drill. I feel it doesn't translate to improved sprinting & mechanics. There is no hip projection, no forward propulsion, the sprint cyclical pattern is not the same. What is the reason why you do boom booms with your athletes?

@Ijump_Ags I’d say it’s more so an issue when the 1080 becomes your entire training program. I’m seeing coaches 1080 every day over and over again. It’s a useful tool but not meant for daily use

@Ijump_Ags So high school athlete shouldn’t be doing resistance or overspeed training? 🤔

Recently an athlete asked me “Why do you coach? What keeps you going?” Answer: For me, coaching is about nurturing athletes’ potential and watching them thrive. It’s not just about track; it’s about guiding them to become the best version of themselves. The true value of coaching lies in the life skills and values we teach, which stay with athletes long after they leave the track. #trackandfield #mentoring instagram.com/p/DV_O8QzDutG/…

@BrendanThompsn Sprinting fast is moreso about timing and placement. I would think that such drills are working on such.

Thigh angular velocity and the ability to switch quickly through full ROM between steps are both pretty important. Not here to go to battle and defend switches / boom booms, but most drills have a time and place somewhere. Young athletes are generally pretty bad at this.

Our athlete Laiana McClinton gets out fast in the Nike Indoor Nationals 60 meter dash Championship prelims to advance to the semis in a time of 7.44. Seeded 3rd overall headed into the semis. #trackandfield #speedtraining

I’m here at Nike Indoor Nationals watching athletes run some insanely fast times. My questions is, where do they go from here? Will they continue to run faster, stay stagnant or eventually sprint slower? Thoughts 💭 #trackandfield #speedtraining

@Rave_Speed You can’t run 1:50 in HS school without the aerobic engine of XC. You don’t even coach track.

Just answered a question about 400-800 training. Generally speaking, the 800 is a hybrid race where fast XC runners are elite 800 runners. The 400 is a sprint where the fastest sprinters are the fastest 400 runners. (200 PR x2 +4 = 400 time) trackfootballconsortium.com/how-to-train-t…

@TroyMooney For sure! Have seen several posts where folks are trying to discount how fast that is. So it’s 10.00 or 10.1 wind legal? That’s still unreal!

@pntrack Not sure where you’re getting your numbers. But in Florida where I’m at it’s the sprinters who are now dominating the 800 meter “sprint .” You can go look from youth track on up.

@Rave_Speed It’s not a sprint in HS, it’s a hybrid. And, 98% of the good HS 800 runners ran XC.

@CoachDaniels06 If you’re only taking P4 official visits. Wouldn’t that mean they have interest in you as an athlete? Or am I missing something.

If you're ONLY taking visits to P4 programs this spring. Whomever is behind your recruitment doesn't have a legitimate understanding of the recruiting process. Be realistic!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of high school football players n Nebraska don’t understand how important track is to their overall development as an athlete. Especially if you’re a skill position player
