Prison security is porous unless or until every person arriving on site is searched. Everyone. No 1 Gov, the SLT, their visitors, custody managers, frontline staff, educators, health, legal, food & canteen delivery, chaplins, IMB monitors, visitors. No exceptions. No exemptions.

It is appropriate to ask questions about releases in error. We should also be talking about, highest ever suicide rates, assault rates, drugs easier to get than toilet paper, staff corruption, organised crime, recall rates, mass solitary confinement, staff retention……

@John_Podmore ‘Friday mornings only’ has been our experience for many years now. I’m pretty sure they came in when evening sessions disappeared.

I wonder how many Governors and senior managers are around on a Friday. I’m told the concept of ‘compressed hours’ led by the former CEO is now widespread.

For every 100 prisoners released 73 are recalled - currently a total of 13,500- equivalent of 9 new prisons at £400m a pop. It would be cheaper and more effective to rent every released prisoner a flat and give them an apprenticeship ( and an ankle bracelet if we must )

@John_Podmore I find it so depressing that it is necessary for HMIP to publish these kinds of thematics. Surely ‘positive relationships’ is one of the touchstones of any well run prison? It’s a real indicator of how broken things have become.

Another superb thematic by HMI Prisons casting a spotlight on another failing aspect of the prison and probation service where senior leaders responsible change like the wind, accountable for nothing. And not to forget - no overcrowding and eye watering staffing resources .
