This is blatantly a form of taxation. In order to enjoy the protections of an LLC, I file the form with the state every year. It takes 1 minute, nobody ever looks at it, and the state extracts $500 from me each time. I am URGENTLY REQUESTING Massachusetts State Legislators to investigate this issue, and pass legislation addressing it. I am a self-employed teacher in Boston, where I have taught guitar for 10 years. This is meaningful work and directly related to my area of expertise, but I don't make a lot of money. I don't appreciate having such a gigantic lump of money taken out of my pocket every year when I already pay all of my other obligations to the city and state. It feels deeply and profoundly wrong to impose this "fee" upon me year after year just so I can enjoy a few basic legal protections and not have to worry about what-if's every night when I go to sleep. In the past I have written to Massachusetts legislators and received a number of responses that this is something they were interested in working on. That was several years ago. And now I am asking you this: can you justify this massive $500 hidden tax burden on self-employed individuals? Does this encourage or discourage people from opening a business in Massachusetts? Mark Zuckerberg started the company now known as Meta in Massachusetts. Perhaps if the State had more business sense, we would have Meta, a very large employer, based here instead of California. I am URGING Massachusetts state legislators to either lower the fee, or create an exemption / waiver for small businesses like myself, because this is deeply unfair. Grey Hub Guitar LLC
