The focus will be on combinations to create scoring opportunities. After the physical warm up (dynamic stretches and individual stretches) we will split into small 1v1 plus bounce player activities. Chance Creation Through Combinations Full session Created with @SSPlanner I thought I would share one of my plans for the coming week for an U19 team. The focus will be on combinations to create scoring opportunities. After the physical warm up (dynamic stretches and individual stretches) we will split into small 1v1 plus bounce player activities. The individuals can use their 1v1 skills while also combining to make moves behind their opponent. Outwit that defender! The progression is to combine two of the 1v1 + 2 squares together to create a 3v3 + 2. First we have wide support players to encourage central movement and combinations. This then becomes end support players to encourage playing forward quickly. The final stage is to play through an area divided into thirds. The corners are cut off. These are "safe" zones for players to receive in (these can be removed if success is very high). Out of possession players are locked into the their zones. In possession players can move, dropping a player down a zone to support and create overloads. A midfielder dropping into the defensive zone and a forward dropping into the midfield zone. Players can break into the next zone with dribble or pass, which they can follow to support. Players are presented with ample opportunities to utilise different types of combinations. To increase the challenge make the cut off corners "no-go" zones which will encourage central attacking.

The game has changed, the route forward is slower and scoring is less important. Team play is more important. Dominate possession and dominate xG. Yet as long as the laws do not change drastically one pass and one shot can be enough to win a game. As forward play has suffered so too has defending. This is a game of cause and effect. Fewer centre forwards, fewer players who are outstanding defenders. Full backs are auxiliary, we can see this when they are asked to defend. Our game is more technical than ever. It is less inventive, less clinical and less inspirational than ever too. In my humble opinion between the two penalty areas teams are very good. How they get into the area can be better. What they do in the area can be better. How they keep opponents out of the area can be better. This means there is a deficit in general training. An edge to be found and exploited. We could and should focus on the boxes in training. Not from a very early age, players need to develop their abilities in smaller environments. Once they are playing 9v9 the opportunity arises. Focus on practices that demand finishing, creating, blocking, clearing, emergency defending. In short, afford opportunities to score and prevent scoring. Break the homogeneous cycle and help players stand out by specialising in the areas that really matter. The boxes. Part 3 of 3 #SundayShare

Technical levels are outstanding. Tactical awareness and the ability to implement plans. Outstanding too. Teams are turning to set plays to find an edge, but really that is just an extension of a truth promoted by Reep and Hughes. It is what we do in both boxes that counts. Ultimately the ability to get into the opposition box is key. Depending on player profiles, crossing is a reliable method but the success rate is low as well being a high risk of counter attacking. Combination play into the box is more secure and creates better chances, but getting into the box in this manner is harder than a cross. Then we have the dribblers, who once they get into the box create excellent opportunities, but their rate of penetration is the lowest yet. At least, all of this is true as the game stands today. We have moved away from the elaborate, imaginative, creative dribbler. They still exist. The ability to play in this manner is possibly higher than ever. The will is lower. The risk too high. Coaches would rather retain possession than risk losing it to be rewarded with a moment of magic, glory and beauty. A safe pass is preferable, thank you very much. And round the horseshoe we go. Again. Once inside the penalty area players are less inclined to take on the scoring opportunity. Once again looking for the extra pass. The "better" opportunity. This isn't too much of a surprise. How many teams play with more than one pure goalscorer? One centre forward who has been raised on ruthless, selfish scoring principles. Part 2 of 3 #SundayShare

What We Do In Both Boxes Evolution. Or revolution? Not in the sense of an uprising. In the more literal, revolving sense. The reasoning might change but ultimately the general result looks very similar. Take as an example Jonathan Wilson's wonderful work Inverting The Pyramid. The title came from the original formations being 2-3-5 or 1-3-6. Over time the formations changed and we saw plenty of 5-3-2. Yet with teams having so much possession and placing emphasis on attacking shape the in possession formations began to look akin to 2-3-5 or 1-3-6. The pyramid had re-inverted. The last 25 years of development has seen playing styles and training methods homogenise to the point where the top level of England looks like the top level of Spain, looks like the top level of Italy and so on. The skill sets of players have become more rounded and complete. To the point where it is quite difficult to tell the difference. Everyone is a midfielder these days.
