@Dred_Tory I mean if the pilots had been from anywhere else in the country and it was just a statement to say Nova Scotian parents? Ya I'd roll my eyes. Like I roll my eyes on a flight from Edmonton to Calgary when a majority of the french speakers on the plane are the crew.

Robyn would "normally roll her eyes" at the idea of respect being shown to Canada's oldest official European language. See, conservatives cherish Canada's history, traditions, and heritage more than left-libs do. Unless that involves doing hard stuff, like learning a language.
Robyn Urback@RobynUrback

I get why people are rolling their eyes at this (and normally I would too!) but one of the deceased pilots was a francophone from Quebec. It would've been nice if the CEO spoke a few words to his family, in their language

Mary’s “How can this be?” to Gabriel only makes sense in the context of a vow of perpetual virginity even in marriage to Joseph for otherwise it would be obvious that she would conceive of Joseph.

Oilers fans: We are 1 Bouch goal, 1 Roslovic goal and 2 Nuge goals away from having 6 players with 20 or more goals. The last time this was achieved was the 1991-92 season when the Oilers had eight 20 goal scorers! Can they do it? #letsgooilers

@StNickRespecter @GarrettPetersen This is the dumbest alternate history take Ive ever heard. Everyone in Québec would've STARVED to death before winter even came close, and french reinforcements NEVER came. Québec was doomed and not by the defenders of the city

If the Quebecois wanted every CEO to speak French all the time, they should have fought harder at the Plains of Abraham. 🤷‍♂️

@KashPrime Canada is a diverse, multicultural nation in which the vast majority of citizens cannot speak French. It is unrealistic to expect Canada to be a meritocratic society and also a society in which absolutely every elite person is fluently bilingual.

This issue here might seem ridiculous from the outside, but Canada is a dual nation-nation. It's one of the only countries that makes it work, with both languages respected across the country. And that means that Air Canada's CEO fell short here.
Scott Robertson@sarobertsonca

PM Mark Carney says he is "very disappointed" in Air Canada CEO's English-only message of condolence: "It doesn't matter the circumstances, but particularly in these circumstances, lack of judgment and lack of compassion."

The cat... TOTALLY out of the bag
To be clear: my position isn't that there isn't a war to be fought, or that they won't ruthless kill everyone in their path to build their army. Only that there's likely a solution that doesn't involve killing all the Others and destroying whatever civilisation they may have.
The cat... TOTALLY out of the bag@TwasBrillig1

I've never seen a convincing argument for why the Others are a genuinely implacable evil that Westeros needs to destroy in war. even ignoring how un-GRRM this kind of framing is, what do we actually know about them for sure that puts them so far beyond typical human cruelty?

@JohnSmithdzz7 @redeemed_zoomer Ya "on the true faith" doesn't mean "they had a bunch of heresy but ignore those" it obviously means "not on stuff they said irrelevant to Christianity" Don't think "I have free reign to disagree on issues of faith" think "I don't have to agree with his geological opinions"

@StNickRespecter @redeemed_zoomer Key word, “on the true faith.” Augustine is not taken in isolation. He is grouped with several other fathers, whom we follow inasmuch as they pertain to the true faith. This is in no way a blank cheque to dogmatize every single word Augustine ever wrote. That’s an absurd stretch.

Puritan Massachusetts was probably the greatest and holiest society to ever exist. > 100% literacy rate > virtually zero homelessness > very little wealth inequality > unparalleled family stability > nearly everyone credibly, expressed personal faith in Christ > all fathers catechized their children in the home > 1 church per town, no denominational divisions

Little known history fact: Puritanism collapsed in large part because they required members to prove they had a “born again” conversion experience. After creating the most fanatical society in European history, none of their kids could claim a provable “moment of conversion.”

@redeemed_zoomer Augustine is one church father, and he freely submitted everything he wrote to the judgement of the Church. Well, the Church has issued her judgement, and we honor St. Augustine by following it as he would have wanted us to. It’s not his fault he couldn’t read Greek.

I still retain hope that the SCC won't be stupid and arrogant enough to try and rewrite the constitution through judicial fiat. But if they do, likeminded provinces need to get together, pressure the House of Commons and Senate to support, and amend the Charter and text of Sec 33 to preserve their ability to use it.
