It’s about one week to the hour since my son Noah and I chainsawed our way through massive poison ivy vines and trees out of the Lost Corners neighborhood of Morganton NC. At that time rain was pouring sideways and leaves were flying upwards. This leaf is about 8 meters above the deck, out our second story window, still suspended by two gossamer spider threads. I think it’s a powerful metaphor for the ongoing tenuousness of our situation and communities still in suspended and compromised circumstances, held together by gossamer threads of community and faith. But it’s also worth pointing out that spiderwebs, which appear fine and fragile, are stronger than steel when compared by weight. Darryl Macias is a #wildmed national treasure. In a command performance, Darryl translates the summary of this entire @WildMedSociety podcast from English into fluent French and Spanish, both languages in which he is fluent—#lifegoals. And in Spanish and in French, one of the only words Dr. Macias finds untranslatable from the English is "wilderness medicine". I learned the lesson exploring international editions of @WEMSText & the new IBSC #WildernessParamedic credential: "wilderness" in some ways is a very American term that doesn't translate linguistically or culturally into many other countries. If you speak multiple languages, can "wilderness medicine" be translated into your language? What are the linguistic or cultural anthropological constraints on that translation?
