The SAVE America Act makes it harder for American citizens to vote. It hands private voter data over to DHS and adds costly hurdles just to register. We should be making it easier for Americans to have their voices heard and have their right to vote — not harder.

Mike Lee is flat-out lying about what's in the SAVE Act. He claims that if someone lacks documentation when registering to vote, they can "submit a simple affidavit" explaining their citizenship. What the bill actually says is: A state "shall not accept… an application… unless the applicant presents documentary proof of United States citizenship."

Jim Banks cites the eighty percent who support voter ID. That number is real. Voter ID is popular because it feels fair and most Americans already navigate it without trouble. The SAVE America Act is not a voter ID law. It is a proof-of-citizenship law. That distinction matters for Hoosiers specifically. Indiana's existing photo ID requirement works because voters already carry what it requires — a driver's license, a state ID, a military card. The SAVE Act requires a birth certificate or passport to register in the first place, plus a photo ID copy submitted with every absentee ballot request and again with the ballot itself. Marc Elias — who has litigated election law in every state — called that absentee requirement logistically impossible. Not difficult. Impossible. Forty-three percent of Hoosiers live in rural counties. Veterans with archived military records, seniors whose documents predate modern databases, and women whose legal name no longer matches their birth certificate are not edge cases in Indiana. They are neighbors Banks represents. The eighty percent poll does not ask about those people. It asks about photo ID. Banks is using the answer to a different question to justify a different bill.

@VoteTrevorLee @extradeadjcb The US Constitution assigns elections to states. The Federal government has no jurisdiction over those records. State privacy laws prohibit sharing unredacted voter information like SSN and DL numbers. I would never want my voter info in the hands of any Federal administration.

Balls! The SAVE Act requires every voter to prove US citizenship in order to register to vote. Married women need a doc that proves citizenship w/their married name. A passport w/married name can prove citizenship. Millions will not be able to get the required documents to vote!
