I’d turn this around and ask how they can expect to build a contender around Luka without paying Reaves.
If he walks, the only other top-100 player on the roster is 41-year-old LeBron. It’s not 2019. You can’t just expect another star free agent to come sign into your cap space.

I know how good Luka is. But I don’t know how anyone is confident the Lakers are going to be able to build a legit contender in the salary and draft asset position they’ll be in after this summer if they keep and max Reaves. It’s not a knock on Reaves either. I really like him and find him really entertaining. But with both of those guys on maxes, how are you putting a title level support cast around them???

He's been on the team for a year and a half and they haven't acquired a single player who figures to be a long-term starter next to him. They started with Reaves and that's really the only keeper they have. They should be on the clock. They haven't built him a team yet.
