The force is drawn from the division’s Immediate Response Force (IRF), a 3,000-soldier brigade trained for parachute assaults and rapid seizure of airfields or strategic locations.

More Bulwark nonsense. The military does nothing without planning and it has decades worth of contingency plans for deployments to Iran. During the Cold War, one of the contingency deployments for my 82d Airborne was Iran. The POTUS was likely presented with a suite of plans from which to choose depending on the objective.

Carter’s extremely failed rescue mission to rescue the embassy hostages from Iran was not done on the fly.
They FAILED because of idiotic interference by civilian oversight.
- Carter’s personal representative ordered dust screens removed for weight over the objections of military.
- Biden’s team ordered the military out before evacuating civilians against military pushback.
- Congressional Democrats allowed Marines to be used as peacekeepers but required weapons not be loaded to prevent any accidental incidents.
I’m sure President @realDonaldTrump and @SecWar @PeteHegseth will not be armchair admiral’s micromanaging troops.
