@rtggeek @amazon oh yes! fedex has been really bad in particular lately. at times it's taking 2+ weeks to get things that would normally be delivered in 3 days. UPS isn't doing much better.

Is it just me, or is quality really rapidly falling? None of the delivery services (UPS, USPS, Fedex) seem to be able to deliver more than about 50% of packages on time. @amazon's delivery times are largely like rolling dice ... "If you order now, this will be delivered in two days ... your delivery will arrive today before 10am ... now your delivery will arrive today before 4pm ... now your delivery will arrive today before 10pm ... now your delivery will arrive tomorrow ... now your delivery will arrive the day after tomorrow ..." It's like a constant "drip drip drip" of ever-shifting goals (and at the end, they always congratulate themselves on delivering at all!). Airplane departure times seem to be rough suggestions at this point. Food quality is, at best, uneven and declining in just about every place to eat. Medical practice has become "which drugs can I get you to take," rather than "do you have any concerns?" We seem to have your choice between "use a Linux host as a host for using web based apps via the only remaining browser" or "constantly update your broken software so you can work around the various problems you're going to encounter on your local machine." It's not "one thing." It's like "software ate the world," and made the world worse in just about every respect. Is anyone else encountering this?

@kmcnam1 When I was a kid, the computer lab was one of the few places where I felt at home. It was a different era. Nerds weren't cool back then we were outcasts, misfits.

@d0rkph0enix Literally comes up all the time when we offer identity intelligence assessments. They would rather...not know that credentials are being abused (which is crazy).

@d0rkph0enix There's a snowballs chance in the future Musk is prosecuted for violating the privacy act of 1974 and does time for it. The dream of him doing the perp walk is my bulwark against despair.

@kmcnam1 I recently watched a story where a man got stranded on an island and needed to be rescued because he asked ChatGPT when the tide was supposed to come in and got the wrong answer.

@John_Capobianco Time is a funny thing. We're always gambling on how much of it we have left. There's no right answer. We do our best and live with the results. I'm very sorry for your loss.

@vazic @SharpNetwork to whom is this message you speak of supposed to be directed? Because I'm here at ground zero and my neighbors are some of the bravest most resourceful people I've ever met. Mountain people are amazing you have no clue what you're talking about.

@SharpNetwork Yes yes yes. BUT. You still must raise people's awareness that in the time of need, they may have to count only on themselves. And it's a very very tough message to send in an environment, where the government is saying "everything will be fine!" and deeper goes into our pocket

Let’s talk about why so many people are saying the people of North Carolina should have been more prepared and why this is a common narrative. We all try to make sense of our world. We order the world with narratives and we need our narratives to help us feel safe. When something bad happens, especially if we are not intimately familiar with the nuances, we try to make sense of the bad thing. Our brains decide, without our conscious awareness, that there had to be a way to foresee the problem. We have to believe that the people we see suffering could have seen it coming. If they could have seen it coming, they could have made different choices. We believe this about others not because we are making a judgement about them, but because — at our core — we need to believe this about ourselves. We need to believe that we can guarantee safety and that the unimaginable tragedy that is befalling others won’t (can’t!) happen to us. It is difficult to accept that natural forces, acts of God, or circumstances outside of our control can wreak this kind of havoc in our lives. We all need to be careful and prepared. We should take regionally appropriate precautions based on our climate and the risks of our geography. At the same time, we must accept that we all live in a frightful world where pestilence, disease, and disaster are no respecter of persons. We live day by day through grace and good fortune. Those who suffer often do so by chance as much as choice. Faith can provide some helpful tools in navigating this reality. Humility, compassion, and an eternal perspective can temper the fear and offer comfort. I know no other way. Regardless of your personal belief system, we must accept that suffering comes even to those who do everything right. Hug your people. Be grateful. Help where you can.

I am very sympathetic to those slammed by Helene, and I pray for their safety and recovery. At the same time, how is it that in 2024, people who live in the paths of hurricanes STILL DON'T HAVE FOOD SUPPLIES? Not even for a few days? No water supplies? No backup fuel? That seems incredibly ill-prepared given the state of our world today. I pray for these people, but I also pray that more people would have the sense to practice some basic level of preparedness. I will always help those in need, but we also need people to stop living under the delusion that nothing will ever go wrong and that food, water, fuel, comms, medicine, banks, etc., will NEVER have disruptions. S##t happens. Repeatedly. Prepare for it. Expect it.
Cassie Miller@RealCassieM

Dear @elonmusk we need help in Western North Carolina. We have no power, no water, and very little communications. We are having to travel miles to get gas, food, and have cell service. All of the citizens and emergency services sure could use some Starlink service. 🙏
