@DescentOverload @kerissakti You are right they could, but they don't have to cause all the competition is useless. People are mad at steam for having a monopoly yet all the "competition" refuses to compete on the same level, then cry when they aren't seeing sales numbers like steam.

@kerissakti Valve can literally do all of that and still only take 15% from you and be massively profitable. lawsuit discovery has found Valve internal documents that Valve is making 60% profit margin. If Valve truly cared about developers, they wouldn't be making 60% profit margin.

Lol 😂 As indie, I gladly give Valve 30% cut. They’re supporting open source: Linux, Proton, Fex-Emu, etc. Valve is keeping tech free and markets accessible for all. They’re prob the only one that still care abt gaming, the gamers & devs. not greed. It’s long term thinking
Seth Dirks@SirDustyDirks

Valve: 350 employees Epic Games: 4,000 employees Valve: $17B annual revenue
Epic Games: $5-6B Valve charges devs 30% of their revenue for simply listing their game. Epic Games charges devs 0% revenue share on the first $1,000,000 Valve is one of the greediest companies in gaming. You cannot be pro valve and be pro developer at the same time.

“ …thinking it's the same shit as unethical slop image generators” Then how did it give Grace makeup, fuller lips and the characteristic plastic sheen of all generative slop? If it looks like slop it doesn’t matter how technical you get trying to gaslight people, it’s slop.
Georgian Avasilcutei@nimlot26

After this whole debate about DLSS 5 I came to the conclusion that most of the people talking about it are completely unaware of what they don't know...they're on the peak of ignorance and don't even grasp how little they understand. They just heard generative AI and like Pavlov's dog they just start drooling thinking it's the same shit as unethical slop image generators...for the love of Christ...go and educate yourself before raging on the internet for no reason. DLLS 5 is not a prompt based generator...it's not creating stuff based on someone else's images and hallucinates results. It uses the information from the raster to build up a final render frame with the same information but with better lighting and shading... I'll even give you an example on how much of an impact better shading and lighting has. This is a character I've worked on not long ago. On the left you have a raster render, with some bad shaders. On the right you have a render with raytrace on, a much better shader for both hair and skin. They don't even look like the same person...do they? This is what DLSS5 is doing....getting a result like the one on the right(tbh a lot better) at a smaller cost than actually rendering it. Still the same geo, same textures, same light sources. Some of you will go and say the one on the left is better and it's the artist's vision. It's not...it's just the artist's limitation due to shading and lighting constrains. Every single artist out there would love to get the right result in real time.

@LundukeJournal Open Source is the most socialistic approach to software, you'll find. But a good software developer accepts reality and is solution oriented. You won't find that among woke people. And it lacks the meritocratic aspects of capitalism. Too many underrated and underpaid developers.

Blows my mind how very hard you Valve glazers will simp for industry stagnatin until the end of time. Yes Steam is the superior option, but we should be pushing for improvments and an evolving industry, not relishing in the 30% drain, and end of innovation that modern Steam represents.

“Monopoly” according to you, is when Valve provides a better service than every other PC Storefront competitor that gamers and most game developers naturally make the CHOICE to use Steam as a service. The best way to compete with Steam is to provide a better Service than Steam…but I guess that’s too much work, so some resort to calling it a Monopoly and sabotage via filing and supporting/cheering for lawsuits against Valve. Like Epic.

It’s less about a sudden shift in sentiment and more about a structural collision. Valve is currently staring down a £6.7bn antitrust claim in the UK over its 30% commission. The "world" isn't suddenly against them—the regulatory landscape is just finally catching up to a 20-year monopoly that’s been unchallenged for far too long.

@DJSnM From my understanding Lithium battery fires are mainlynot fough on small scale with water as 1. It may still be delivering residual electricity and could short 2. Because the heat output is too high for low volumes of water to reliably suppress - but full immersion works

I see there's a bunch of people who have learned that there's types of fire where you need a specialized fire extinguisher to avoid making things worse, it's good to know this stuff. Lithium-Ion battery fires are not one of those fires, the lithium is a salt rather than a metal so it won't react like the lithium metal in a lithium battery. Water cools the surroundings, preventing the fire from spreading, and it can cool adjacent cells to stop the thermal runaway from propagating. Ideally you want to get the burning item outside if possible, avoid breathing the smoke which probably contains nasty fluorine chemicals.

@JohnDekkaTech @AlperenAkkuncu It's also only a 3 bit quant so it's small and dumb, given the size of the chip for such a small model I have doubts it could even scale to 100B+ models

@AlperenAkkuncu You can LoRa though. But I can't see how that integrates with this concept. Also 8B params isn't that much. I guess for a 450B params model there isn't enough silicon per chip available. Multiple chiplets maybe, but then again you'd need a fast interconnect. 👀

Apparently, there is new hardware that can run LLMs much, much faster. It can easily give you over 15,000 tokens per second, which is stupidly fast. From what I understand, it's 'hard-coded,' meaning that you can't change the weights or anything; the chip itself can only run the model from the day it's manufactured, forever. Interesting concept.

wait this is fucking AWESOME lol - dude fused an AI model *directly* into silicon which means this thing answers before you've even hit enter - processes 17,000 tokens PER SECOND 😂 for context, openai's quickest model does 1000 tokens per sec (i believe) - this is 17X faster - spits out answer immediately. - 10X faster and 20X cheaper than nvidia blackwells i love how the hacker community is pushing locally run models. they may be smaller but the speed is a meaningfully better experience and ultimately what people will want imo. also worth noting these chips are gonna get much better so soon we'll have frontier caliber models on our phones.
Wildminder@wildmindai

17,000 tokens per second!! Read that again! LLM is hard-wired directly into silicon. no HBM, no liquid cooling, just raw specialized hardware. 10x faster and 20x cheaper than a B200. the "waiting for the LLM to think" era is dead. Code generates at the speed of human thought. Transition from brute-force GPU clusters to actual AI appliances. taalas.com/the-path-to-ub…

You need 2 Mac Studios with M3 Ultra to run Kimi K2.5 locally at ~20 TPS. At that speed you can barely run a single agent, not a "swarm" or an "army." Kimi K2.5 costs $1.5/M output via OpenRouter. Even if you max out 20 TPS 24/7 that's ~1.7M tokens/day which is equivalent of $2/day or $78/mo. You spent $20,000 to save $78/month, limited to one agent at a time, zero scalability, and hardware that's obsolete in 12 months. Your claim of "$20,000/month in API calls" is off by a factor of 256. You can drop to smaller models for higher speeds, but the API prices drop just as fast, Grok 4.1 Fast is $0.50/M output.
Alex Finn@AlexFinn

I'm sick and tired of the people who don't understand why I spent $20,000 on this set up, and plan on spending another $100,000 by the end of the year IT DOES NOT MATTER THAT LOCAL MODELS AREN'T AS GOOD AS OPUS 4.6 That is not the point. The point is me being able to run a swarm of local AI agents powered by local AI models unlocks a world you can't imagine A world never discovered by humanity before Right now, as you read this post, I have multiple local AI models reading thousands of posts on X and Reddit Hunting for challenges to solve Those local AI models are feeding hundreds of challenges a day to a manager model The manager model (Henry) decides what the company (Alex Finn Global Enterprises) will build. The company is constantly working. Constantly researching. Constantly building. Constantly shipping If I did this with local models I'd be spending $20,000 a month on API calls. With my set up, it's free. I have an army on my desk. Never resting. Never eating. Never complaining. Always conquering. Here is your problem: it's not that you don't understand this. You don't want to understand this. You don't want to think this is possible. Your brain doesn't want to believe this is the world we now live in. It is. And the faster you can accept this and get on board, the faster you can enter the new society. Otherwise, you will forever be doomed to the permanent underclass. Make your choice.

Nicki Minaj is just unironically correct - the US is essentially the only democracy on earth that **doesn't** require an ID to vote - politicians (especially from liberal states) are literally fighting to NOT have people prove their citizenship or identity The only reason to do this is to allow cheating.
