@grailcountry @ASaunders_PGH @DavidMTodd The conclusion here is that the consensus is a good indicator of success in rounds 1 and 2 and that from round 3 onward there is considerably more variability between success and consensus. Basically, buyer beware if you reach in rounds 1 or 2.

Now, every once in a while, you’re gonna have something. Somebody’s assistant coach used to be somebody else’s college roommate, and you get some piece of information that nobody else has. Whatever. But if your scouts are way off of the national consensus, it’s more likely that your scouts are wrong than the national consensus is.

@ASaunders_PGH @DavidMTodd Reach is not a mathematical concept. After the first 10-15 picks it’s really just take the guys you like in the general range they should go. I just don’t see many crazy picks based on value. Wetjen for sure and the ND guy in the 6th. I’d rather argue about who they took lol.

@ferrolla33 @DavidMTodd According to math, that’s a reach. Whether it’s significant, probably depends on what else was on the board, what the alternatives were in terms of trades, and how much of a habit you make it.

@ASaunders_PGH @DavidMTodd It’s absurd. So if they want a player at pick 53 but he’s consensus ranked 58 then according to Alan Saunders that’s a reach? That would be an insane way to draft. Enjoy your stuff but we’re gonna have to disagree here.

Chance to make a statement in Milwaukee. Carmen Mlodzinski gets the ball looking to bounce back, but the bigger story is still the long-term trend — no home runs allowed in 71.1 straight innings. If that holds, he gives the team a chance to win each time out. The Pirates have already taken the first two and now have a real shot to finish the job. A sweep here would be their first in Milwaukee since 2022 — and first road sweep there since 2016. And don’t overlook Nick Gonzales. Quietly one of the hottest bats on the team right now — 11-for-24 over his last six and a .328 career average in this park. He’s been a big part of why this offense keeps moving. Opportunity in front of them. Go take it.

@jpakey99 @ASaunders_PGH Let’s not act like Tomlin was a draft guru lol. He was here for the last few years of Colbert which were pretty bad. I think the draft is fine in a vacuum but some weird positional picks in the 4th and 5th. If they bump Wetjen to the 6th and take a real dude in the 4th it works.

Great article with some really bad replies. I'm hopeful the players can make a huge impact not only this season but in the future. But it really felt like Omar didn't have a plan and I wonder how much Tomlin the last couple of years.
Alan Saunders@ASaunders_PGH

The #Steelers first three draft classes under Omar Khan were very well regarded, mostly because of his ability to move around the board to find value while meeting the team's needs. That all went out the window in 2026, as the team left a ton of value on the table in an underwhelming draft class. steelersnow.com/saunders-steel…

@ASaunders_PGH @TheMitchellRoss Other than Wetjen I don’t see any big reaches. The 6th and 7th round guys almost by definition can’t be reaches. The fullback TE was taken after a huge turn on TE and right after the first fullback taken. It was definitely a weird draft position wise.

@TheMitchellRoss Evaluating the process. The draft is a crap shoot and a large portion of it is luck. They did not maximize their chances.

@halupkisultan @JarrettShe20317 @ASaunders_PGH Max would have been drafted within two picks - he was the highest rated OT left. And as you said, he had the same number of college starts as Fautanu and 12 more than Broderick Jones. So there’s no reason he can’t continue tribute this year.

@JarrettShe20317 @ASaunders_PGH They definitely would’ve drafted him. This BS narrative that he’s a project is that - BS. He started 31 games. He’s less a project than Freeling is. He’ll need work but he isn’t inept. Ridiculous

@JN_Steve_ @Alex_Kozora Kick return is almost pointless with the new rules but a good punt returner can still have a big impact. Def early pick but I don't want to risk seeing another Gunner Olszewski fielding kicks ever again.

You guys can hate the draft slot but if Kaden Wetjen is housing a kick/punt in Week 15 with Pittsburgh in the playoff hunt...you're not going to care what round he went. #Steelers

@GlobeStoreSanta @FarabaughFB Undrafted guys make teams all the time. If he proves himself and has a role he’ll make it. Same for anyone drafted after like the second round.

@FarabaughFB Stop. He’s not making the team. It was a very cool moment, but they should have thrown a dart and taken Nussmeier to compete for a bench spot.

Mike McCarthy sees Eli Heidenreich as a four-down player. "We're going to open the playbook a little bit for him." McCarthy says everyone in the draft room felt the emotions after they selected him.

@Brainiac115 @FarabaughFB They are both white so there’s that lol. But as players not really. Wetjen is a KR/PR specialist. Eli if he makes it would be in a 3rd down hybrid role like Gainwell.

@FrankDomenicJr @FarabaughFB With ten picks it was already a certainty that a few wouldn’t make it or be on practice squad. If he shows out he could possibly be a 4th RB, 5th WR type.

@FarabaughFB For this kid to make the team it would mean they failed with 2-3 of their earlier picks. They took 10 guys but have 44-46 players guaranteed to make the roster barring injury
