Interest is based on principal owed. At the beginning of the loan, there’s more principal owed so a much larger portion of the payment goes to interest and a smaller amount goes towards principal. Each month (assuming a standard fixed mortgage), the amount going towards interest will decline while the amount going towards principal will increase. It aggravates me when people include taxes and insurance and call it their mortgage payment. That’s not true.
