Several of the dogs rescued during the slaughterhouse closure this year outside Yulin were still wearing collars and highly likely to be stolen pets. The dogs will be checked for a microchip once safely at the shelter and our partners Vshine will post widely on Chinese social media about their rescue to ask anyone to come forward if they believe one of them is their canine companion. If no owners are identified, the dogs will be made available for adoption to find new, safe, loving permanent homes in the Beijing area.

This is far from a scam. Over more than a decade, our advocacy and rescue at Yulin and across China has shone a spotlight on this brutal trade and resulted in hundreds of dogs and cats being saved from slaughter. In that time, we have seen the Yulin event significantly reduced in size with far fewer dog meat markets and fewer animals slaughtered. It has also reduced in length of time, with the core “festival” days declining from 10 days to now just a couple of days; and it has reduced in visibility with dog slaughter mostly carried out at at slaughterhouses on the outskirts of Yulin, hidden from view. The words “dog meat” has also been removed from restaurant signs and the former large public displays of mass dog meat eating a thing of the past. Considering the horrific scale of the Yulin “festival” many years ago, this progress is encouraging, but Humane World for Animals remains committed to ending the dog and cat meat trade in Yulin and across China. More proactive and decisive steps are needed by the authorities to end this cruel and often illegal trade in Yulin and we are supporting our partner Vshine to deliver targeted activities to encourage the authorities to take further action.

@humaneworldorg But Yulin festival will still be held every year… asking for donations is just a scam for western society as Chinese know dogs are our soft spot. They make some videos now and than but with no permanent solution to stop this atrocities. China needs the animal welfare law first!
