Luke blamed himself either way. Regardless, showing Luke brought low allows him to rise again. It makes him human.

Jesus Christ man. It's a HUGE reach to claim Han’s dialogue in TFA forced Luke to be a would-be nephew killer when feeling responsible could have meant a thousand different things. Han saying Luke walked away after a tragedy is just the setup, but the specific character assassinating "why" he was in exile was a deliberate choice made by Rian. There's a world of difference between Luke feeling guilty because he couldn't stop a dark side influence and Luke who actually attempted to kill his nephew. By blaming Abrams for Luke's portrayal in TLJ all you're doing ignoring the creative agency of the person actually writing the script, aka Rian. You could've easily explained Luke’s exile as a search for a way to save Ben or a mission to protect the Jedi legacy, etc which would have kept his established character intact while still fitting Han’s description. Instead, RJ took the most cynical path possible without doing any of the actual work to earn that kind of decline. Again, a mystery box isn't a prison, and a cliffhanger doesn't mandate that a hero has to attempt killing his nephew then becoming a quitter who ignores his friends in danger. To have the guy who saw light in Vader suddenly decide that a "fleeting moment" of murderous intent is a good reason to let the galaxy burn is a 100% regression. If you have to break the fundamental nature of an established character such as Luke to make your plot work then you aren't being deep.... you’re just being lazy or making excuses for lazy writing

Han literally told us about Luke in TFA. It was all established right there. Thinking about this, I feel very stupid for ever being mad about TLJ Luke. He was exactly what Han said, a Jedi who felt responsible for a tragedy and walked away from everything.

And the problem with a black Snape, in terms of optics, is that he’s an asshole and villain for 95% of the story.
