Still very early to fully assess this, but here's my read so far on today's U.S.-Iran ceasefire and how Trump boxed himself in. This whole thing started with a fundamental miscalculation. Trump and his team apparently didn't expect Iran to hold its ground the way it did, and that miscalculation set off a chain of events that spiraled fast. Trump made several strategic blunders especially during the last couple of days. He threatened to destroy Iran's power plants, bridges, and water infrastructure. Probably his own generals flagged that as potentially crossing into war crime territory under international law. Then this morning he escalated with the jaw-dropping statement that "a whole civilization will die tonight," which set off a massive political firestorm back home. Calls for Trump's removal reached a fever pitch among congressional Democrats, with lawmakers openly floating impeachment or removal via the 25th Amendment. Over 50 House Democrats plus senators like Ed Markey called for him to go, and remarkably even some on the right joined in, including some prominent America first crowd. On top of all that, Trump was warned that following through on his threats would likely trigger Iranian retaliation against Gulf oil facilities, sending energy prices into freefall, and that an Iran with nothing left to lose would have zero incentive to ever reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The problem? He had already backed down from similar ultimatums twice before. A third retreat would destroy his credibility, but following through risked economic catastrophe. He was totally boxed in. The result is a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, largely on Iran's terms, with peace talks now set for Friday in Islamabad. Iran gets a two-week pause in exchange for temporarily reopening the strait. Not exactly the win Trump's rhetoric was promising. As for the Iranian people, regardless of how the politics play out, they are facing extremely tough times ahead, especially economically. Years of sanctions, war damage, and now deep uncertainty make the road ahead very hard for ordinary Iranians. It's still too early to know how this all plays out, but as a first take, this looks like a significant and self-inflicted diplomatic loss for the U.S. We'll see.

Trump woke up this morning threatening genocide against a country of 90 million people. We should be back in DC RIGHT NOW to stop this deranged madman from blowing up the world. Does this seem urgent to you, @SpeakerJohnson? How can you sleep at night??

@naz_gol @RepYassAnsari @SpeakerJohnson Bombing civilians and civilian infrastructure was a war crime then and is war crime now. Also, Iran did not start this war, it was an illegal war of aggression started by US/Israel. They started bombing Iran without any legal justification. Iran was not the aggressor.

The literally bombed a girl school the first day of the war and another school the same day. They have bombed health facilities, universities, residential buildings, steel manufacturing, petrochemical factories, railways, bridges, oil storage. Trump just threatened to wipe out all power plants, destroy the Iranian civilization. What world are you living in?

@nullptr_a @RepYassAnsari @SpeakerJohnson For 47 years nothing was effective, it's the last resort. So far less people have died from bombing than been killed, tortured abd raped by the regime. You wouldn't say that if your family was on the death row.

@RepYassAnsari @SpeakerJohnson Iranian here! You just STFU okay? Our families in Iran tolerate bombings so they can free from the thugs and criminals your fucking Democratic Party brought to power in 1979 and held them in power for 47 year!

This is not foreign policy, it’s a deranged mad man threatening to wipe out an entire country. It's past time. The 25th Amendment must be invoked.
