The Problem with this is that you compare apples and oranges:
Bitcoin mining is elastic, if you 10x your computer, but everybody does, you won't get a bigger share of the time limited seigniorage of new BTC.
AI: infinite money sink, with unproven returns. They're yoloing funds!

Bitcoin miners are selling their bitcoin to buy AI infrastructure Marathon, Riot, Hut 8, Core Scientific. The companies that literally produce bitcoin are deciding that AI compute is a better use of their capital than holding the bitcoin they mine Don't think everyone's really sitting with how strange this is. These are the people CLOSEST to bitcoin's monetary properties. They run the machines and understand the halving math. They know the supply schedule better than anyone and they're choosing to sell. The margins on AI hosting are so good right now that the opportunity cost of holding bitcoin is actually negative for them. Think about that for a sec: It's CHEAPER to sell BTC and build data centers than to hold BTC and mine more of it Wild times right now.

@NickDarlington AI is becoming a more attractive customer for US baseload supply. Bitcoin miners are looking for new destinations. Scotland still curtails wind. We bridge that gap by placing flexible Bitcoin mining where renewable energy is being wasted.

@EdConwaySky Is it being stored for future use? Can it provide the joules required for industrial processes? Are we paying curtailment fees because Wind produces energy when not required rather than on demand? Do we still need full grid capacity back up in gas?

@BitcoinForWales It’s not exactly correct to say it’s all because of wasted wind. The biggest part of that number is turning up gas generators - which would have been incurred anyway - they fire gas up to match demand - because of pure admin trick this is summed up into “congestion payment”

Reminder that the one part of the Fingleton Review that the govt dropped entirely was the one that would have allowed the planning system to take local benefits like this into account when granting planning approvals.

Why does @SeagreenWind keep taking the low road? They've curtailed 184,437.2 MWh this month – 2nd highest volume! But received just £176,200 PAID BY SYSTEM, averaging an incredibly low £0.96/MWh. Other farms get vastly more to switch off. 🧐📊 curtailcoin.com

This is a good idea, but we're doing it in the most Soviet way possible.
DESNZ ruled out using locational price signals, but are now reverse-engineering market outcomes via adminstrative diktat.
It's like when the Soviets tried to deal with the fact their factories were extremely inefficient by introducing a complex system of bonuses to replicate how factories behaved in a market economy.
Better than nothing, but strictly worse than actually letting markets work.

This is a great talk.
The bear scenario has been played out a few times by miners with BTC bear markets: over-leveraged miners get smashed by falling Bitcoin prices => terrible ROIC, tenants out. Just like with Bitcoin, now with AI bet: it is all about the number going up.

This chart illustrates the problem with weather-based renewables and why @Ed_Miliband is wrong to suggest we should base our energy policy around them
Over the past week we barely generated half the potential we have installed - only 3% of the time was output above 16 GW (we have about 32 GW installed)
However for a third of the time (32%) output was below 10% ie of the 32 GW installed we were actually generating less than 3.2 GW
Clearly we relied on gas to fill in the gaps. There is no storage technology that could fill such a large hole for such an extended period
Now consider the £billions we're spending on renewables. This chart shows just what a bad deal we're getting: expensive and insecure energy
Time for a new plan (and a new Energy Secretary)
