@WeezelToshi @JeremiahDJohns Scale is very important. Did other POTUS's lie? Yes. Does Trump lie much, much more often about more important issues? Yes. "Dark" illegal immigrants on the scale you're proposing are also impossible. I don't think your side is thinking through the resources they'd use.

@sesquential @JeremiahDJohns Go one step further. Biden lied. His administration lied. Obama the same. W before that. When you actually admit that, then 12 million illegals staying static for 30 fucking years seems pretty stupid. Higher. Much higher.

However stupid you think the people running the country are, they're stupider. The guy running border patrol last year thinks that 1 in 3 people in the country is an illegal immigrant. A total hallucination based on literally nothing.
Gregory K Bovino@GregoryKBovino

@ReichlinMelnick Aaron, the 100 million is a solid figure. No conspiracy theories, just research melded with 30 years as an immigration officer mixed in with this thing called common sense

@allenanalysis Hmmm, you had a pretty forgiving tone on Hunter Biden’s escapades, laptop influence-peddling, and pardon. Now Zach Witkoff’s 2022 coke arrest gets full condemnation for family ties. Balls are strikes for Republicans, strikes are balls for Dems. Consistent standards matter.

Take a close look at this. The man being tackled in this video is Zach Witkoff. His father is Steve Witkoff. Steve Witkoff is Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East. At this moment, he is the lead US negotiator in the talks with Iran to end the war. 🧵

I wrote about this in my newsletter. The Weather Service didn't launch balloons recently and got surprised by tornadoes in Kansas. DOGE cuts at NWS cut out weather balloon launches which gather data for storm prediction. You are less safe because of that choice.

Why don't we have ballons here today? Anybody.

@WeezelToshi @JeremiahDJohns Of course we're being lied to. Trump lies to us all the time. His cabinet lies to us all the time. The highest levels of government are occupied by some of the most immoral people in the entire country. But there's not tens of millions of extra people here, hiding in the bushes

@sesquential @JeremiahDJohns Yale suggested 22+m in 2018. Yale a hotbed of conservative thinking? If liberal institutions are suggesting far more illegals may be present than the government is admitting to, dont ya think maybe, just maybe, we're being lied to?

@WeezelToshi @JeremiahDJohns Yes, of course they're counted. We also know things like, # of school students and houses. We track water use. 50m unknowns? Absolutely silly.

@JeremiahDJohns And you're even dumber than he is. You actually think all illegals are counted in the census? Na. Theres 360m known people, around 15-20m known illegals. Another 50m+ unknowns.

In Mere Christianity, CS Lewis has an awesome opening riff about how most people know the difference between right and wrong, but they justify acting immorally by appealing to "special exception." They know they shouldn't hit a friend, but what if that friend was being so mean? They know they shouldn't steal a seat a bus, but what if that person got up and created a moment's confusion and then the seat was up for grabs? Etc. When I read this section, I thought a lot about contemporary politics and the way that people justify their politics, not by appealing to higher principles, but rather by appealing to "special exception" to argue that their admitted indecency is justifiable in context. A lot of MAGA vice is justified by special exception. Trump's defenders rarely defend his crookedness directly. They don't say "it's wonderful to use trade policy to enrich the Oval Office, it's really awesome." They say: Well, look, it doesn't really matter, because the left is so dangerous, Biden maybe did something similar 3 years ago, Democrats would do the same in power, and so forth. I heard something similar in that NYT conversation everybody's talking about. You even see it in the headline: ‘The Rich Don’t Play by the Rules. So Why Should I?’ Why, hello, special exception. When you start arguing that stealing food and French paintings is justifiable in the context of political protest in an age of prevailing distrust, you're similarly not arguing *for* any kind of a universal principle. Nobody actually wants 300 million people stealing fruit from the grocery store. Nobody actually wants every Louvre visitor trying to rip a Manet off the walls. These virtues don't scale. (Because they're not virtuous!) Sap that I am, I want us to get to a place where politics is about fighting for what is right and decent, not about justifying what sort of indecent behavior might be somewhat understandable or technically justifiable given the other side's vice or the prevailing levels of indecency. The point is to build the kind of goodness that scales. nytimes.com/2026/04/22/opi…

@BrentScher If you were actually in the business world, like I am, you'd know that happens in the private sector all the time, that people lose a job and take another one at lower pay.

@moseskagan @TheHistoryOfTh2 That happens with CEOs all the time, Moses. Guys making $17 million a year at one company gets fired. Can't get hired anywhere near that level again. In general, I doubt the private sector is much better at this.

@GregoryKBovino @StopTrump2025 @ReichlinMelnick Is that 100m out of the US population of 320m, or do you think there are 420m here? If so, where? Because we also count things like the number of doctors and schools and teachers and houses. And there aren't enough of those for an extra 100m.

To believe Chief Bovino's ridiculous claim that there were 15 million undocumented immigrants in 1975, you'd have to ALSO believe that 12+ million people deliberately chose not to get green cards and a path to citizenship during the Reagan amnesty in 1986.

More than 13,000 people were living legally in the United States, waiting for rulings on asylum claims, when they received deportation orders to countries they had never been to and had no ties to. An Afghan man who fled the Taliban was told he would be sent to Uganda. A Cuban woman working at a Texas Chick-fil-A was arrested after a minor traffic accident and told she was going to Ecuador. A Mauritanian man in Michigan - Uganda. A Venezuelan mother in Ohio - Ecuador. Bolivians, Ecuadorians, and others ordered to Honduras. A Guatemalan woman who had been held captive, repeatedly sexually assaulted, and arrived at the border with her four-year-old daughter - pregnant from a rape - sat in a San Francisco immigration courtroom and heard an ICE attorney say she would be sent to Ecuador, Honduras, or Uganda. She had never heard of Ecuador or Uganda. The diplomatic agreement with Honduras allows a maximum of 10 such deportees per month. Thousands have been ordered to Honduras. The Ugandan minister of state for foreign affairs confirmed to the AP that none of the people ordered to Uganda have actually arrived. In March, ICE legal officials quietly emailed field attorneys to stop filing new motions for third-country deportations. No explanation. Not publicly released. The earlier orders are still in effect. These 13,000 people have lost their work authorization. They cannot pursue their asylum claims. They cannot find out if they will be put on a plane to a country they have never seen. A senior attorney at the National Immigration Law Center told the AP directly: the goal is to instill fear. To drive people to abandon their cases and leave on their own. That is a documented assessment of the purpose. The limbo is the policy.

They are among more than 13,000 immigrants who were living legally in the U.S., waiting for rulings on asylum claims, when they suddenly faced so-called third-country deportation orders, destined for countries where most had no ties, according to the nonprofit group Mobile Pathways. to.pbs.org/3OfRi2Q

Let me be clear: this SICKENS me. I spent YEARS writing letters to get my interpreters in America because they SAVED OUR LIVES. One of my interpreters was a 15 year old kid. One day, we were working with the Afghan police and he went stone quiet. After we left, I asked him what was wrong. He told me that the Afghan police had just threatened to cut his lips off for helping us. He was FIFTEEN. And he risked EVERYTHING for our soldiers.
Admiral James Stavridis, USN, Ret.@stavridisj

Shame on us. I think of the brave Afghans that stood alongside us against the Taliban, especially those I worked with personally during my four years in command of the NATO mission there. It is incomprehensible to me that we would not bring them here to the United States, fulfilling the most fundamental obligations of trust and honor. nytimes.com/2026/04/21/wor…

Seeing two responses from the left on this 1) Republicans did it first; which doesn’t make it okay nor is that really true since both sides have been gerrymandering for decades and both sides have escalated the problem 2) Republicans shot down a gerrymandering ban in 2022; which places all of the blame on the Republicans and none on the Democrats who stuffed the bill full of provisions unrelated to gerrymandering How about instead of being tribalistic morons who refuse to believe their party can do any wrong, we all decide to hold our representatives accountable and demand a proper single issue bill? But no, it’s way more fun to feel self righteous isn’t it.
Aidan Mattis@MattisRedacted

I’m sorry but I simply don’t see how redistricting a purple state to be almost entirely blue is “democratic”. Half of Virginians vote Democrat, so half of their representatives should be Democrats.

The depraved depths of the Trump admin is just impossible for people to believe. And I believe that most people actually do not believe it. They think if the government arrests someone, the person obviously must have done something wrong.

...the law in Dec. 2025 to let ICE arrest refugees with full status for no other reason than their green cards weren't approved yet. At the *exact same time*, USCIS ended all refugee green card approvals, which were already down ~90%. ICE then dragged refugees from their homes
