@LichQueenSpeaks @roteklaus @kittcanis When I was a teenager yeah. Though now having read more and grown up, solid opinion. If it helps it’s also why I think libertarianism is stupid (but so much a worse read)

there's a great scene in this where the anarchist children who can't even conceptualize a prison decide to play-act and lock a kid away under some stairs for a day to prove how tough he is only to be met with the grim reality of incarceration when he's eventually released

@Lasermazer @MaxFagin One of the big questions is about having kids. so you’d need someone to go up there and get pregnant and see if their kid survives birth and growing up (and can be repatriated to earth without dying in this scenario).

@MaxFagin What would be the ethical objection to building some kind of rotating space station in orbit with rotation velocity giving 0.38g and having people stay there for lengths of time similar to ISS? Still very expensive but a lot less than trying to build a station on Mars

Around the office, we call this the Trillion Dollar Problem, because there is simultaneously: 1) Almost no immediate incentive to answer the question, beyond academic interest 2) Severe ethical obstacles to answering the question 3) Trillions of dollars riding on the answer
Space Koala@SpaceKoala

What annoys me about "no idea if 0.38g is enough" is that we don't know if 1g is too much, too little, or just enough. I mean, people with obesity wind up with denser bones, but that doesn't mean people should be fatter, because obesity also causes joint problems. Martians might have far few joint problems and sports related injuries.

@BocchiDumbass @LichQueenSpeaks @roteklaus @kittcanis I can sorta see that, but think that probably fails as a good metaphor given iirc the moon people are effectively ideal settlers (no displacement of locals). Plus with the independence because conquest isn’t worth it, it looks more like space Australia than third world

@DeuceRuth @kittcanis Yes, but also not my issue with anarchism (though I do think thats a valid critique). I saw it as an internal issue, that anarchism would be unsustainable and was only being sustained by belief. (been a while since I read but I recall that was an anxiety of the main character)

@somaranon @kittcanis They are a colony for the overdeveloped capitalist earth which extracts their resources. Earth leaves them be because it's too much trouble and waste going all the way to the moon to fight a war for something they're already getting

@LichQueenSpeaks @roteklaus @kittcanis My takeaway from the book was anarchism cannot work as the only reason it was working here was basically author fiat. On reflection after some years it also basically required depicting the anarchists as incredibly nationalistic (this is cosmically funny as well)

@LichQueenSpeaks @roteklaus @kittcanis On reflection, yeah basically (to the cause of anarchism, which is an incredible irony), like they have to make godly inhuman sacrifices to keep things going. (I suspect the influence was more Soviet stories of heroic workers, which honestly same thing but communist)

@roteklaus @kittcanis I was more taking, this only survives cause the author really wanted it to (but knew this). And looking back because all the anarchists are also all the most devoted nationalists possible.

@somaranon @kittcanis Kinda had the opposite take away in that Le Guinn realistically portrayed how an anarchist project shouldn't be portrayed as an automatically Utopic society.

If the rumours about a Russian mobilisation in the poorer cities are true, then I am going to bet that the next Western commie propaganda narrative will be "Those evil Ukrainians are slaughtering the poor young innocent Russian conscripts"

@quantian1 Also underrated is that easy bomb/elevator methods require massive amounts of low yield uranium. One reason early bombs were exclusively bombers instead of missiles was the sheer weight of the material.

@Noahpinion Note - they keep the tanks warm to keep the oil flowable, so the heat seeker probably lost target in the smoke and headed for the next warmest thing it could find...

One state/two state isn’t really a question of preference. The one state solution has already happened. This is it. The only remaining questions are how long the legal fiction will keep going and, if it ends and statuses are formalized, what form that will take
Derek Pederson 🇺🇸🇺🇦🇻🇪@DerekPederson3

The idea that it is logistically impossible to remove 150,000 settlers from the deeper West Bank settlements is pure, distilled, 175% cope. 13 million Germans were ethnically cleansed out of Eastern Europe after World War II and basically no one cares today.
