I’ve been trying to be more understanding to Boomers over the last few days so I feel I’ve earned the right to say this to them. You are an electoral bloc whose power peaked in the late 2010s and will start to decline more and more precipitously as the oldest Boomers start to die off. Being asset-rich and cash-poor, you are INCREDIBLY vulnerable to a confiscatory government. Unless you can build some sort of working social contract for younger people, you will almost certainly spend the last decade of your life in a cheerless State care home being occasionally slapped around by surly West African carers.
Rosie@rosie_eats

The replies to this show us why the British right is doomed. Complete inability to show empathy or solidarity with young people. Almost makes me want to vote green!

The fact pensioners would rather plunge newborn kids and young children into poverty, instead of selling their million pound houses or stop receiving the state pension when rich, IS BONKERS.

@justaphag6 Ok but who’s gonna buy a million pound house if they do give that up? Other millionaires? I just don’t believe that turfing people out of their homes they spend their entire life paying off is the answer

My views on the state pension have been consistent for years and I’m not about to start pretending otherwise for a few likes. The triple lock is unsustainable. Everyone knows it. The only debate is who’s brave enough to say it out loud. @KemiBadenoch knows it. @MelJStride knows it. @Nigel_Farage knows it. @RobertJenrick knows it. @Keir_Starmer knows it. @RachelReevesMP knows it. @ZackPolanski knows it. @EdwardJDavey knows it. And yes, you do too. What we’ve got isn’t disagreement, it’s theatre. A cross-party commitment to nod along privately and say absolutely nothing useful publicly. I don’t say things to be popular. If I wanted that I’d post pictures of my lunch and call it “thought leadership”. I’ve got friends and family whose opinions I actually care about. The approval of randomers on this app doesn’t quite crack the top ten. If pointing out the obvious makes me unpopular, I’ll cope. Best of luck to everyone still pretending this adds up.

Interestingly, The philosopher David Benatar provided a strong argument that it’s actually morally wrong to have children… he said that when you carefully examine the value of pain and pleasure, there is an important imbalance…that the presence of pain is bad and the presence of pleasure is good, but the absence of pain is good even if there is no one to experience that good, while the absence of pleasure is not bad unless there is someone who is deprived of it. From this, he concludes that bringing a person into existence always introduces harm, because every human life inevitably contains suffering, whereas not bringing a person into existence avoids that harm without depriving anyone of pleasure, since there is no person who exists to miss it. On this basis, he argues that procreation is morally problematic because it imposes unavoidable harm on someone who did not need to exist in the first place. Even the best lives include pain, loss, and death, and these harms are guaranteed once a person is created. Benatar also argues that humans are biased in how they evaluate their lives, tending to underestimate suffering and overestimate well being due to psychological adaptation and optimism. When these biases are set aside, the conclusion follows more clearly, creating a new person exposes them to harm for no necessary reason, while not creating them avoids harm without wronging anyone. Therefore, he concludes that choosing not to have children is the more morally defensible position. 😅

@ReemAmirIbrahim Makes for a good propaganda. Blaming everything on minorities. Ironically. Many localities who support far right parties like Reform etc. Them localities are full of ppl claiming various benefits. They r not against benefits as whole. They just don't like others getting it.

"White British families (54%) were the most likely out of all ethnic groups to receive state support – families from the Chinese ethnic group (25%) were the least likely to" None of this is good, but blaming the bloated welfare bill entirely on foreigners misses the point.

@rosie_eats it’s sick. All we want is for them to pay their own way… but they slide in howling about how we just want them to die and how life was so hard in the war (that ended 5/10 years before they were born), and somehow WE are the entitled generation. Vote green 💪🏼 Change can be good!!

I think it’s time we had a serious conversation about the poor planning of the generations before us. Those who tell us to cut back on coffees, holidays and meals out, should have done so themselves for the past 50 working years to save for their retirement. Sell your mansions.

>“We will fundamentally change how this country operates” >wants to deregulate housebuilding, meaning working class people will be forced to live in even worse conditions >wants to end the “war on landlords”, the people responsible for the housing crisis
Rupert Lowe MP@RupertLowe10

Owning a home is FAR more difficult for young men and women today than it was for my generation. That’s just a fact. Average earnings have not kept pace with average house prices - to suggest otherwise is ignorant. The gap has grown at an astronomical rate. The young have every right to feel pissed off, I’m angry for them. And I detest this patronising attitude of people my age that we just happened to manage it all so much better through ‘common sense’ and fewer avocados. There are millions of young Brits who work hard, take care of their money and dedicate themselves - and yes, they are struggling to find a proper home. They have done nothing wrong. In fact, they’ve done everything right but the system still failed them. I am ensuring that there is a political party to finally represent them - Restore Britain is that party. A party that supports the aspirational and committed young British men and women. Scrapping interest on student loans. Stripping back the power of empire-building planning bureaucrats who cruelly prevent sensible house-building in fair locations. Crushing the overbearing regulations that make building anything so very cumbersome. Overhauling leasehold rules which trap owners with mutating service charges. Ending the vindictive war on landlords to make sustainably renting a proper option. Slashing tax to hand back financial control. Entirely abolishing stamp duty for Brits. Because we will not tinker with the status quo, we will not conserve it, we will not reform it. We will fundamentally change how this country operates. The model must break. I will make you one promise. Restore Britain will break it.

The High Speed 2 “bat tunnel” is one of the clearest examples of how Britain is tying itself in knots. A structure built to comply with environmental legislation has cost over £100 million. It was designed to protect a colony of around 300 rare Bechstein’s bats living in ancient woodland. That’s roughly £333,000 per bat. We are not failing to build because we lack engineers or ambition, we are failing because we’ve made infrastructure hostage to bureaucracy. No serious country can grow like this.

The IEA is v clear. No new Oil & Gas exploration if we're to meet climate targets & mitigate worst effects of climate crisis. My party committed to good jobs to last a lifetime, a safe climate & permanently lower bills. Labour? Less clear by the day. theguardian.com/environment/20…
Josh Simons MP@joshsimonsmp

My, this debate can be facile… Yes @ZackPolanski, it wouldn't lower bills, achieve energy independence, or insulate us from price shocks. Mad anyone would think drilling two fields would! It would: —> Create jobs - I care about good jobs —> Provide tax revenue when, whatever MMT says, we need it - I care about schools, hospitals, poverty reduction, investment —> Reduce our /global/ carbon emissions - I care about Britain’s global impact on climate change, which is about how we meet domestic demand Yes, double down on renewables, insulate homes, lower bills. AND green light those two fields. The politics of and, not or 🤯🤯
