The DG @DrPatrickAmoth went on National media on the 2nd day of April 2024 and proposed scrapping of this program. He is now attempting to do that through a committee he appointed and gave inexistent powers to make sweeping recommendations from mere opinions and without carrying out any credible research. We urge @HonAdenDuale @psmuthoni @fnoluga not to allow this. @kUCOofficial will do everything within the law to ensure our profession remains intact.

Dr. Patrick Amoth: The number of clinical officers has increased, but they suffer unemployment. Is it prudent to continue on that path or retrace and progress their careers? The best course of action is not to make a painful situation worse #TheExplainer @TrevorOmbija

TWO TERM ENDORSEMENT FOR THE CURRENT KMPDU LEADERSHIP 5 years ago (when F1 photo was taken) we had very fierce KMPDU campaign and elections. It was messy and even people went to the Supreme Court. Basically we lost the first year to inward fighting. There were even talks of the union seceding and all that, but the current leadership maneuvered around it. Here is what I found impeccable. 1.The union leadership managed to stay intact despite the noise. Some of the NEC members deserted, but G, the chairman, and the team managed to sail the boat through the storm. 2.The union has fought hard given the state of our healthcare system. This is the first group I have seen visit all the regions. I have seen a team in Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, and Msambweni fighting for its people. I have seen them shake hands and share tables with governors, members of parliament in both houses, and even the president, all advocating for better conditions for doctors. 3.I have seen the SG and his team survive police brutality and they still never gave up. For the first time in a very long time interns felt represented by the union. The hectic MOH posting of interns, not just for doctors but also other cadres, was impeccably handled by the union. 4.The current leadership is also easily accessible. Never have I heard anyone say it is difficult to access this group of leaders. They have been humble servants of the people. I say these things not because the current leadership is my friend, but because they have worked. In fact there are many times I have criticized the leadership and they have handled criticism with maturity. An unspoken hero, Miskellah, understands the murky waters. He has been labeled as an embarrassment to the leadership due to his brutal honesty on union matters, but that is what his role is. He cannot be the good guy all the time. He has been a great DSG to the SG, just as Mundia has been to Chair Mwachi. The union has made progress. They have not achieved all we wanted, including my push for digital health and alternative employment for doctors, but they have definitely made strides. We want that to continue and even more. It is for this reason that I endorse the current leadership for a second term in totality. 2TAM IT

@ptason Why do you want them transitioned to MBChB? They have to start from year one to year six... provided they have the right cluster points. No shortcuts.

Yes I have. Majority of Clinical Officers Officers do not want BSc CM scrapped. Some BSc Clinical Officers want expedited transition to MBCHB similar to what used to happen in the past, an idea that is welcome. They don't want the course scrapped too since it's their bridge to their desired career. The ideation that BSc CM has to be stopped for expedited transition is not only hypocritical but a clear misaprehension of contextual facts. Clinical Officers can work in different jurisdictions, we have Clinical Officers in UK and many countries across Africa. Many more countries are also opening up opportunities. standardmedia.co.ke/sports/health-… The Union has no issue with with bridged path to MBCHB for BSc but will not allow anyone to reverse gains made on academic progression.
Andrew Githiria MD@DrGithiria

Chairman, have you conducted “public participation” or “Internal Survey” among the Bsc CM graduates to determine the opinion of the majority, in (to use your own words) self determination?

@DrGithiria BSC CM is a scam. You can't train someone all that long without a future made for them, no recognition. Many universities are offering the course just to earn something from these young people. Scrap it and transition them to MBCHB or else very sharp brains are going to waste!

BSc Clinical Medicine graduates are at an inflection point. For too long, their concerns have been ignored or downplayed, forcing them to pursue advocacy and lobbying outside their union structures. Their frustration is valid. We support a clear, time-bound accelerated transition pathway into MBChB, with an eventual rationalisation/closure of the program. Kenya has the capacity to train enough doctors to meet local demand—and this path would convert an existing workforce into fully trained medical officers. There is room for reform and hope for BSc COs.

Whenever I do my major ward rounds with nurse interns,Doctor interns,Diploma CO interns and Degree CO interns,it pains me see the how competent and good the BSc COIs are. They are just afew steps behind their Doctor colleagues....and to imagine that the healthcare system as presently designed considers them same with their diploma colleagues is just absurd(not that the diploma are poor, their training is just fit for purpose). But we must find a way of allowing the BSC guys to transition to MBchB.Otherwise we stop the course because we are robbing very bright minds off their future.

I don’t know but Kisii University offering MBChB sounds like a joke!

@ElvisEl36116080 @MiskellahMD What are parallel MOs? Why do you say they couldn't afford MBChB when the government pays most of the fees for those who pass KCSE and are admitted to public universities? Just say they didn't meet the proper criteria for MBChB.

@tsiome @MiskellahMD Ajuoga, most Bsc Nurses and Bsc COs who scored weak As and strong A- are more intelligent than most med students who scored Bs(self-sponsored) UON admits 480 and only 150 scored As and the rest are self-sponsored. MBChBs are the most knowledgeable but not all are bright.

@Dr_GorOdhiamboh @mzelendo @MiskellahMD You didn't get an A plain? Still you didn't fail. That's why the examiners have the grades from A to E. Because we ain't equal. What we must teach out children is that not all can get As. With whatever grade, there is a trade they can do.

@mzelendo @MiskellahMD A C+ can't grasp the vast medical content. In developed countries, becoming a doctor isn't that easy. We cannot allow our profession to be diluted. Again, getting an A minus and below is not a sin. There are courses you can do with that and perfect. For Medicine, it is an A plain.

Dear Super Governor @HonKangata. There is an advert from your health department that seeks to hire Clinical Officers & other healthworkers as 'interns' except Medical Officers. Am writing because am convinced that you cannot allow such discrimination and contravention of Labour rights if this was brought to your knowledge. For Clinical Officers, internship is a requirement for licensure and every licensed Clinical Officer has undergone internship that is facilitated and supervised by @MOH_Kenya. Muranga County is known for it's innovations in health and progressive development. This would only taint the great legacy you are building. Please reign on your administrators in health to do the right thing as provided by @PSCKenya & @srckenya
