On April 7, 1989, Nylon Cheng 鄭南榕 a publisher and pro-democracy activist died at age 41 from self-immolation in protest of draconian KMT anti-sedition laws used to silence dissidents Today, Taiwan celebrates April 7 as its national Freedom of Speech Day

@JamesSurowiecki I advise everybody to be like me and be incapable of telling when somebody doesn’t understand sarcasm. I just assume they’re continuing with the bit

The number of people who did not understand that this tweet was sarcastic is genuinely shocking - and funny.

@nocontextmemes Every instinct in my body wants me to reply with something like “Well yeah, the US is the default country” but it’ll be seen by people who subscribe to the article of religious faith that Americans are incapable of sarcasm or irony and I don’t want to have to deal with that

@axiochrono @nocontextmemes So yes, that level of detail is how I’ve learned to respond. You can say “well that’s not how I would have reacted if you just said you were from the USA” but most people I talk to are not you But including the country in an address in an international context? that’s weird

@axiochrono @nocontextmemes As an American living abroad I can say that if I say I’m American without adding any detail, the person asking me where I’m from almost always expects to hear more, and often acts annoyed if I don’t supply it in my initial answer, as if I’m being cheeky and they have no patience

Regardless of one’s profession, people need to read more. Read within your field, read outside of your field, read fiction, read long form journalism, push yourself to read. Too many people remain functionally illiterate and ignorant of the world despite abundant opportunity.

The problem with Italian restaurants is that they can't do pasta properly. They always serve it with lots of bite in it and the sauce isn't sweet enough. It's amazing how much they charge and they still can't equal what you can get in a tin for 45p at Tesco.

@anon_opin You’re supposed to watch it pondering things about the wider world that you know the show will never address, like if the USA in this period is as racially harmonious as the UK then its internal political situation must be vastly different

Bridgerton could be the greatest things ever created but there's no way I'm ever watching it, because there's few demographics harder to give a fuck about than posh English people in the early 1800s.

@ManaByte Clearly this person’s point was “if you think Apollo 13 landed on the moon in 1970, despite there being a very big Hollywood movie in the 1990s specifically about it NOT landing on the moon, you’re an idiot”

We didn’t land on the moon in 1970. We landed on the moon on these dates: July 20, 1969 November 19, 1969 February 5, 1971 July 30, 1971 April 21, 1972 December 11, 1972

@mikusingularity I can’t believe people exist who actually believe this with any consistency. Surely they’re just saying it because being unpleasant to faceless strangers online is one way they can bring some joy to their own unhappy lives?

@agraybee Regular “I’m not a mind reader” caveat and all that, but I felt a lot of the people appearing to misunderstand the Bechdel Test knew what they were doing, they were just doofuses who found it funny to deliberately annoy feminists

Everything Price Sufferer (but especially eggs)
The Bechdel Test was probably the most misunderstood millennial feminist artifact. It was just a way of illustrating how few movies portray women having normal interactions. It wasn't a literal test of feminismness.

@souljagoyteller I know I harp on this a lot but when it comes to Republicans on social media, “they pretend to believe it because they think it’s funny” is an extremely useful explanation
