I was holding my cousin's 6-month-old baby when his wife's phone lit up on the dining table.
The preview showed a message from an unsaved number:
"The DNA results are out. He is yours. When are you telling him?"
My heart skipped a beat.
I froze. I looked down at the innocent baby smiling up at me, then toward the kitchen where my cousin and his wife were laughing together while cooking dinner.
They've been married for 8 years and struggled for 7 years to conceive this child.
My cousin worships that baby. He spent nearly all his savings on hospital bills and fertility treatments.
I quickly looked away, but I couldn't stop thinking about what I'd just seen.
Ten minutes later, the phone buzzed again.
"Don't ignore me. If you don't send the money by 9 PM, I'm forwarding the PDF directly to his WhatsApp."
Just then, my cousin walked out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a towel.
He smiled warmly and said, "Uche, let me take the baby so you can eat."
As he reached out for his son, his wife's phone started ringing.
It was the same unsaved number.
She rushed out of the kitchen, her face suddenly pale, and grabbed the phone before anyone else could see it.
Her hands were shaking so badly she almost dropped it.
She looked at her husband, then at me, and hurried into the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
My cousin stood there completely unaware, gently kissing his son's forehead.
Watching a storm head toward someone you love while they have no idea it's coming is a different kind of pain.
And what makes it even harder is that telling him without solid evidence could destroy everything just as quickly.
